By THE CAIRO POST
CAIRO: Egypt’s population on Saturday reached 89.110 million, compared to76.1 million in 2009 according to a report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on occasion of the World Population Day.
The figure indicates that Egypt’s population has grown by 2.720 million in one year.
Cairo governorate registered the largest population of 9.3 million while South Sinai governorate is the least populated with 167,000 people only, according to the report.
“People under 15 years of age made up almost a third of the population (31.3 percent) while elderly people aged 65 and over made up 4.3 percent,” according to the report.
The report showed an increase in average of life expectancy at birth among males from 66.5 years in 2006 to 70.1 while females’ life expectancy increased from 69.1 years in 2006 to 72.9 in 2015.
The report also referred to ‘health services improvement’ indications after spotting a decrease in infant mortality rate from 24.5 children per thousand live births in 2008 to 22 children per thousand live births in 2014.
According to a report issued by CAPMAS in 2014, 26.3 percent of Egyptians live under the poverty line.
The 2014 report also said that the average illiteracy percentage (for those aged over 10 years) reached 25.3%; 33.1% for females compared to 17.8% for males.
According to CAPMAS, the world population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050.

I doubt the accuracy of these figures in a country where the registration of births and deaths is not reliable.
But it still suggests that there are a lot of new mouths to feed.

Re: Egypt population hits 89.11 million
So whats the answer to my tongue in cheek remark? You can't say education as it has proven time and time again that it doesn't work because the great many affected by this are not interested. Controlled euthanasia via automatic abortions on a grand scale may work, but those we call fellow members of the civilized worlds population would object, as I would. They exist, so we have to co-exist alongside them. Hitler once stated that there where far too many Jews on the planet... then he had a brainwave and look where that got him. One thing that may be the answer is to try and persuade them, the child producing adults, that a girl child has the same value in life as the male child. IMO.

Give all youngsters a motorbike, it's these vehicles that seem to have a more effective way of controlling the population explosion. Sorry to say!

I don't think that anybody is calling for mass abortions, euthanasia or a repeat of the Holocaust Dusak but there must come a time when the Egyptian people will realise (or probably not) that a country that is 95% desert cannot support a projected population of 100-150 million. Its already the largest importer of wheat in the world, Allah will not provide.

Educate them, and move them out, most of them want to leave anyway...
Some decent ram pumps installed down that river, ( or Solar electric if they cant manage that ) and much more desert land could be claimed and irrigated for farming purposes. also there are billions of tons of fertile silt under lake Nasser.. 60 years worth...
No need to buy expensive fertiliser..

Unfortunately they all suffer from the 'jiggy jiggy syndrome. They know no better once wed. Keep pushing it in, keep pushing them out. It matters not at the time that the family income can not support the new offspring, but they continually moan about the running costs when you speak to them in the streets. This Ramadan I gave the door man outside [not my doorman]200Le. He does little or nothing for me but continually complained to my friend that I had not given him anything last year, as I had genuinely forgot. I sent the money via my friend as I had not seen him for quite a while due to me leaving early in the mornings. She told me a few days ago that he had expected more as it was expensive to keep his family and I had given nothing last year. Ungrateful sod.
