Strolled along from the W.P. to view the "Temple Hotel", which TUI are advertising from Manchester. It is, of course, the old "Morris Hotel", which had been advertised for sale for £4million the last I had heard!
I was surprised to see the progress on the new 4 Seasons site since we left Luxor, 2 years ago. It's going to be one huge hotel! My local source tells me that they have also bought the land opposite, where the Military School etc now lies. Turn your sound off before you click on the video.

Re: Progress on the 4 Seasons i Luxor
Many thanks for the update Teddyboy.
From what I understand this new hotel, expected to open sometime next year, will have 200 rooms which is double what the old Winter Palace has to offer. In my opinion for what it's worth, I believe it's in the wrong area totally. People who will be staying there will be paying top $, do any of us believe they will enjoy a peaceful stroll the moment they leave the protection of its front door.
I remember when the Morris Hotel first opened, like I'm sure many others do. It was decked out in fantastic plate marble and granite from floor to ceiling, must have cost a fortune, and probably why two of its upper were unfinished long after it opened for business. I certainly well remember the leopard skin couch that was in the main reception area,........Bet Lynch would have been proud to have owned it.

Yes I've seen reports all over, telling that the 4 Seasons will be opening next year. However, my source reckons that it will be 2030 before it's actually finished!
It's Egypt, who knows?

Re: Progress on the 4 Seasons i Luxor
The hotel hasn't moved on much since December when we were last there, but it looked like the skeleton of the structure has just been finished then, or certainly near completion. The screen around the hotel is a more recent edition though, the front was all completely open.
I remeber the Morris Hotel when it first opened, no one was resident at that time.
We spoke to the receptionist who was a very charming lady, and she introduced us to the manager who took us around the hotel and showed us the different rooms they had to offer. We were very impressed, and he gave us a brochure and a price list, which he said we could have the rooms at that advertised rate providing we contacted him directly when booking.
Just 28 dollars a night for the larger rooms.
As I recall, the hotel was not complete at the time but I was told it was going to have around 180 rooms.
It was in an ideal location, it was sad to see it's demise and closure at one point. We were never able to book our stay there sadly.
Let's hope it does better now under it's new name and brand.

If anyone is thinking of booking a Nile view room next door at the Iberotel think again. 50% of the view is blocked by the new hotel so you can’t see up the Nile anymore.

Lets not forget the splendour of days gone past, The Savoy, The Luxor, The Windsor, gone but not forgotten. xxx

Re: Progress on the 4 Seasons i Luxor
What is happening with the Luxor Hotel, does anyone know?.
In the old days you could wander in there from Sindbads and walk around the hotel and the grounds to the back and front..
I would go quite often and bung the guy at the front entrance 5LE, and he woild take you up in the lift and see a couple of the rooms. It was funny that lift, as it never lined up properly with any of the floors itt stopped on, so you either had to step up or step down when exiting the lift.
Now Sindbads has gone, there seems to be no access to the hotel and the view is obscured from the street. Nothing seems to be happening there.
One evening back in December, we had a chat with the guys who are placed at the entrance of the old Mercure Inn (Swiss inn, egotel) and walked down what's left of the driveway where the shops used to be and the old kidney shaped swimming pool.
Another site that has lain abandoned for what must be at least 15 years.

Re: Progress on the 4 Seasons i Luxor
That whole area was supposed to be occupied by the new Winter Palace extensions, which were mooted years ago, and displayed in artist's form on the large hoarding where the New Winter used to be. There was a huge model of the whole development on display in the Victoria Lounge in the Old Winter for a while. I've struggled to find the following little video, which I took 16 years ago, this very month!

Re: Progress on the 4 Seasons i Luxor
I always remeber beu g able to leave the Mercure Inn via a small path at the back of the hotel that took you into the WP gardens by the pavilion area. On my first visit I assumed the 2 hotels were somehow linked, because of that path.
The second image in the link you posted looks like it could well have been viable had it consumed the grounds of the Mercure inn. Though a large footprint to keep secure. No doubt there would have been large perimeter walls which you don't see in the illustration. .
What I liked with the Mercure inn, apart from the family run feel, and the enchanting little front garden, was the smell of the flowers from the WP gardens that would waft over in the evenings into our room when we occupied a room at the rear of the hotel.
We once occupied a front room, and the views were amazing, as you could see luxor temple and almost touch it.
Happy days there in the early 2000's, that area had a great vibe to it back then.
I was so what dissapointed when we tried out the Sonesta back then. I managed one night and morning there and managed to get moved into the Movenpick.
The Sonesta was supposed to be what it is now, back then it was very superficial, and one very quickly found the aggregate beneath the polished granite veneer.
Still, without that experience, we would never have found the Movenpick, which we still enjoy to this day.
I do enjoy the Steigenberger, I like to sit in the atrium and enjoy the ambience of that place. I would quite happily stay there. I have seen the rooms and had a wander about and it looks like a very nice hotel.

The only time we stayed at the Egotel/Mercure Inn, we had some money stolen!

That was certainly ambitious, even back then in 2010.
