Re: New Temple on the Nile???
I can't imagine that pylon or the columns would have lasted very long with such close proximity to the river.
Don't look back. That's not the direction you are travelling towards.

Re: New Temple on the Nile???
It is really understandable that you mention this John, but actually this is still a mystery to the present day archaeologists. The Luxor Temple was much near to the river than we see in the present day, nearer 100 years ago, I suspect even nearer still in ancient times.John Landon wrote: Mon Jan 26, 2026 3:50 pm I can't imagine that pylon or the columns would have lasted very long with such close proximity to the river.![]()
Perhaps a clearer example would be to look carefully at the pylon that is part of the mortuary temple of Ramesses II on the WB, as you look at this from the present day agricultural land, this is where in ancient times a canal was present from the river to a harbour at Habou temple, then cut along a northerly course upto SETI mortuary temple. before this it passed Ram II and it's great 'front door' being the pylon. It is only in the past century that this great pylon has deteriorated in the sad fashion we see today. At this same point if you look carefully in the present day field you will discover the feet of two gigantic statues of Ram II that stood there from ancient times, part of one of those great statues is now in the British Museum

Re: New Temple on the Nile???
I had noticed many years ago, that there is clearly a Nile side water entrance to Luxor temple on its west side.
The channel is clearly there and the end of the entrance at the temple is flanked by 2 statues.
It's close to where the boats used to park up, and some still do. Before the cornich was introduced, you could still make out the entrance on the bank of the Nile which lined up with what I could see across the road, so the entrance to the temple must have had walls either side protruding into the Nile.
The Nile is unusually straight before and after the 2 temples in Luxor, even though the overall course of the river is curved, so the exact perfect place to build these 2 temples, so as to escape erosion of the river bank on the east side.
