Thebes restaurant

Post by crewmeal »

I have to say this restaurant is top quality. It’s next to the Nile view but don’t let that put you off. The food is freshly cooked to order and well presented.

The atmosphere is very Egyptian. The staff are very obliging and offer the little extras to go with the food. The pricing is reasonable usually around 200 LE per item.

Totally agree. This is my local restaurant and it is always good value with good service. I saw this morning that the open air part by the river had gone again due to "work" on the Corniche but the restaurant upstairs is still functioning.

Could be a problem! Because of the work on the new Corniche, there are no outside tables on Ramlah. The restaurant has put some tables beside the stairs. Not ideal and quite cramped. but the food is still good. But that may change .....

The seats are very hard and uncomfortable. Everything else is fine.

Trying to recommend any decent restaurants in Luxor has become extremely difficult these days.
Nick and his pal spent a fortune in the Old W.P. the food was sh*t.

I used to have breakfast in the Oasis (Palace) Cafe near the Coptic school in Labib Habashy St.
Sofra in Mo Habib St always tried hard to please as did Snobs. Not forgetting JJ s' in Karnak.

These days I'm told, one has to visit different establishments for a particular dish the rest of the menus
fall well short of decent fayre.

These days I usually recommend Shiek Ali The Marsam Guest Hse as the only place I would spend my money.

Are there no catering schools around here ? "obviously not" .... 8)

Ps: What with all the Cini knocking around a decent Chinese Restaurant wouldn't go amiss methinks...

Sadly I had a different experience tonight. It seems all the staff have changed since last year and a child is cooking the meat. When presented on a plate instead of the silver grill, the chicken was undercooked and the Kafta burnt. When I sent it back I waited ages for fresh food to come, It didn’t, by which time the rice was cold so I offered to pay and leave. They refused my payment and I left.

Disappointed that such changes are for the worse.

It's the butchering skill that is sadly lacking over here, the only butcher I have met here with the skills was over in La Gouna.
Try and buy a leg of lamb ? impossible unless one buys a whole lamb and butchers it oneself.

Personally the best place I have found to eat is from my own kitchen. Sad but true... 8)

Ps: Here they eat to work rather than us westerners, eat to enjoy...

Ps: Does anybody have any ideas on what an earth they are constructing opposite the Africa restaurant ?
It looks like some sort of shopping mall, which will remain unoccupied as are all the other 'malls due to the ridiculous high rents that will be levied.... 8)

Surely portioning up a chicken can’t be that much of a skill. I would have thought that it was the easiest option when it comes to meat. Lamb I’ve had in the past has always been skillfully cut and cooked.

The’s a new Chinese restaurant opened on the West Bank corniche. Looks good if you can find your way in via the minefield they’re digging with good old fashioned pick axes. The only problem is it’s on UK prices with an average main course costing 635LE.
