As if life in Cairo wasn’t difficult enough, some bright spark has decided to copy another western idea..great in concept but utterly impracticable, and dangerous, if you’ve ever experienced road traffic in Cairo
One for the terminally suicidal.
#SceneBuzz: RENT A BIKE THROUGH DOWNTOWN CAIRO FOR EGP 1 AN HOUR WITH ‘CAIRO BIKE’
If ever there was a mode of transportation to quench our urban wanderlust it’s the rented bike, and ‘Cairo Bike’ is finally making it happen with the launch of its first phase in Downtown Cairo.
Created through a collaboration between the Cairo governorate, UN-Habitat, and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, with funding by Switzerland-based Drosos Foundation, the pilot operation is giving us access to five stops: Tahrir, Mohamed Farid, AbdelMoneim Riyad Square, El-Falaki and Abdel-Khaleq Tharwat Street. All stops are fully powered by solar energy and equipped with surveillance cameras.
Users can download the Donkey Republic app and rent a bike for EGP 1 per hour, or EGP 8 for the entire day. The bikes will be tracked using the mobile app with a prepaid card, and are also all fitted with GPS trackers. The next phase is planned to launch this September. Once fully operational, there will be 260 bikes, distributed over 26 stations across Cairo, to further sell people on the idea of bikes being alternative transportation vehicles.
The governorate is also planning on adding bike lanes to the streets of Cairo, but they have yet to reveal any details about this project.
