I lived in The States many years ago.
My summation of that race hasn't changed one iota.

Minds of children in the bodies of grownups.
One day whilst 'Bar-B-Quein in my 1/2 acre Floridian backyard, my banker neighbour shouted "he grab your gun, we got us some burglars corralled!
" er.. I haven't got a gun" "No sweat have one of mine".....

Turns out they had a classic florida house surrounded firing into it from all sides.
The dastardly burglars called the Police themselves...
Nb: 'I did not attend the 'gunfight @ ok corral. My missis put her foot down....

Don't get me wrong, I mean there are and have been some great minds in America.
But, that is a minority not the majority they really do think superman, batman, ironman, are real people.

To be fair, he’s actually recommending arming teachers…..not the school kids.

Discretely apparently …..although still a dubious idea. He’s trotting out the Republican/NRA line that gun control won’t stop the loony ( true) and it’s better to protect the potential victims.

Some American school kids are as dangerous as your average Mexican drug baron and arming them would not be too clever.

Trouble is, anyone and everyone in America seems to be a potential victim. Schools, churches etc are soft targets for someone intent on a mass shooting spree. It’s not immediately obvious why America seems to breed these maniacs. The gun deaths ( homicide) per 100,000 of population is around 4.5 in USA compared with < 0.5 in most other countries. Nowhere comes near USA ….except south and central American narco states.

The easy availability of guns, particularly assault weapons, may be a factor but it doesn’t explain the apparent readiness of mentally deranged young men to commit mass murder.

Seems to me there’s something rotten in American society.

It’s not obvious to me why an 18 year old should be permitted to buy an assault rifle - capable of pumping out oodles of shots in seconds -and enough bullets to take on a brigade without some background checks and you’d think some moves to curb such sales would be uncontroversial .

Apparently not…according to the gun lobby and red-blooded Americans .

It seems they’d rather hold vigils and pray for the victims of mass shootings.

Well, if I was apportioning guilt after a man had shot loads of people, I’d blame the man.

But I’d be sure to take his gun away!
