If the author thought 18 million was “densely populated “ I wonder what he’d make of it now.

Where did you come across that little gem? I remember reading all the National Geographicals from the 1950's
I used to spend my Summer holidays at my Gran's in Bishops Stortford and she had a huge stash of them. Read the lot over the rainy days.

I decided to join the 21st C by asking anybody on FB for unwanted smart-phone.
A friend from Wales sent me a Samsung along with the magazine.
Smart phone ? I don't think it's that smart, bit like TV remote controls.
They make them more difficult to use....

Stick with it Doctor, the Android smart phones are pretty good.
Its become an essential travelling companion since about 2006. Torch, Alarm clock, music and video player, camera, sound recorder, translator, and calendar reminders, keeping in touch on Whatsapp, and the interweb, mostly using WIFI at cafes and the like, thus saving a fortune in data charges.
They say you get used to new things. wrong. you get better with Practice... Repetition is the mother of learning and all that....
