More about Laandan

Post by Grandad »

We have been talking about London recently and with a couple of hours to kill this morning I put this slide show together from visits we made a number of years ago to 3 visitor attractions. I have suggested a few landmarks to look out for but there are many more if one looks closely. Here it is.....

Some very interesting images there Grandad. However, my vertigo kicked in a few times!

Yes me too BBlux, not good with heights. Nice photos though Grandad.
31 seconds into the photos there is a triangular pointed thing, what on earth is that?

@carrie
Carrie if you mean something that looks like a very tall pyramid, That is The Shard when it was under construction. When finished it is 1015 feet to the very top and my second set of pictures include some from the upper viewing level at 800 feet.
If you have not heard of The Shard, it is designed to look like a huge shard of glass with the top pointed like broken glass.

Just to bring you up to date Grandad, there are a few new skyscapers planned for the City, but none so special as what one that will be called the Undershaft, which has already been given its nickname, being the Trellis, although not one brick has been laid yet.

It will be built next to the Leadenhall Building, which is where there is an old 1970's 23 floor building, which years ago was Norwich Unions general office for the City, since then it became the Aviva Building. Soon this building will be demolished in preparation for the foundations to be set for the future tallest building in the City, being 74 floors, and almost as tall as the Shard.

Incidentally, there are a number of comical names given to many buildings in London, though I think my favourite and least known is one called the Can of Ham building, which for obvious reason is 'what it says on the can', near St Mary Axe.

Cheers for that info A-four :up
I suppose the one that truly fits its appearance is 'The Gherkin'. I think it is great when architects take off the blinkers and come up with something really imaginative, mind you, it must give the steel fabricators and glaziers some real headaches. :tk :tk
