So after a couple of fires the 'Shed arises from the ashes...

Now I am beset with a quandry, Shall I call it A Gazebo, an Arbour, or my favorite, a Pergola
which translates as 'an erection in a monastery garden...?

That's if he hasn't bu**ered off to some music festival this weekend...

My personal preference is to call a small seating area with an encompassing top, back and sides and open at the front, an Arbour. Something with partially open sides and a covered top, usually weatherproof in some way, either cotton or canvass, I would call that a Gazebo. Whereas a Pergola is usually an open topped structure with the shade derived from the roof lattice of crossed timbers or in your case Rush, Reeds or Bamboo, I would call yours a Pegola, but others may say differently.

Etymologically speaking, I don’t think there’s much difference between an arbour and a pergola.

I would expect a gazebo to be a more substantial structure.

I’m not sure I’d grace a covered- over section of my back yard with any of these words.

Far too pretentious

I used to have a substantial wooden structure I built in my garden comprising 4 stout uprights and a latticed top of narrow but deep timbers. (sorry no pictures) At each corner was planted a different flowering plant, in one a Honeysuckle, the second a Wisteria, in the third a Virginia Creeper and in the fourth a Russian Vine. I had visions of the lovely long racines of the Wisteria dangling down, with Honeysuckle and Virginia Creeper giving flowers and Winter colour, the vine was just to give some added foliage, I called that my Pergola. In truth the Wisteria never ever had a single flower on it even after many years, the Honeysuckle refused to do anything other than form a large bush around the post, (lots of flowers though) the Virginia Creeper did quite well and spread over the top and looked really colourfull in the Winter. However the Russian Vine or 'Mile a minute' as it is apptly named went completely mental and was across my garage roof and over my fence panels in weeks, it even managed to get inside the garage roof space. It goes without saying that it had to go and so did the pergola after many years of inactivity, the Honeysuckle still lives attached to the remaining corner upright though.

Yeah but did it not get destroyed by the fire in that area?

No, as it was also my flammable store including paint, varnish, thinners ect, it went up like a torch.
It never even spread to the jacuzzi roof, but did leave me with lots of metal tools with no handles.....
Ps: Very interested by the visit from the fire investigation team who arrived the next day, highly efficient.
