Egypt Today reports that a tip was received from the legal department in the High Council of Antiquities that an ancient item, made of pure gold and weighing 22 grams, had been reported missing, having been exhibited in hall 44 on the Egyptian Museum’s ground floor.
The former official has been charged, though she is claiming her innocence. She has informed the police that the item could have been lost during the post-revolution chaos in 2011.

No surprise there....but pretty shocking that it's only just now been noticed that the item has gone walk about

They seem to be pretty blasé about what they have in their custody.
Little wonder that museums elsewhere are reluctant to return important artifacts (legally acquired) to Egypt.
I seem to recall Hawass asking for the Rosetta Stone to be loaned for the opening of the GEM. They might need to chain it to the floor , notwithstanding that it's hardly something you could sneak into your pocket
