Dr, have you been to Roma Pizza? If so, what's your opinion? I'll be interested if you can give a comparison please.

I don't do East Bank restaurants anymore, since I learnt my Egyptian neighbour 2 doors away is the Chef of
a well known Indian restaurant. I just have to much respect for Indian cuisine.... 8)

Its a pity that Pizza Hut closed, their pizzas were the best. I've visited Roma Pizza many times since the Hut closed, and have to say that the quality has been steadily declining over the last few years, and not just my opinion.

I've been meaning to visit this one, but didn't realise that they serve pizza. Their menu on their website (extremely slow to load!) only shows drinks and smokes. :eat

I finally tried a pizza at Makany yesterday. It was so warm outside in the evening that I decided to dine in in this air-conditioned coffee house.

The seating is not suitable for dining, but then this is not really a restaurant. It is a lounge with music/football on screen throughout. The pizza menu is an add-on but not the main raison d'être. Tea/coffee/shisha etc. A very wide selection of ice-cream, shakes, etc., but nothing much for which you need to sit down at a table with a knife and fork.

Of course there are many who would say that pizza is finger-food, but I am not one of them.

Anyway, back to the pizza.

It appears to be hand-made and the toppings are well done, with not too many extras. My salami pizza only had extra olives apart from the main ingredients.

But the base: I can see why the Americans call a pizza a pie. A solid piece of "short" pastry, unleavened, raised at the edges. No sign of a soggy bottom. It would definitely hold its own as finger-food for those that like that sort of thing. I am unlikely to return there.

The price: EGP 40 for an 8" salami pizza is fair enough but there is no way that I would describe this as the best pizza on the West Bank. Even the offerings at Fayrouz and Sheherazade are better, although almost certainly not completely freshly made. The best I've had was at el Nakhil several years ago, but these days their restaurant is so quiet that a pizza would need to be pre-ordered.

Regarding the base, I prefer thin and crispy (a la Pizza Hut) to all that stodge the Yanks invented. That way you can enjoy the toppings, which IS the pizza, the dough's main purpose being to hold it all together so you don't need cutlery, though I do to start with while it's still hot. Thanks for the review, but we'll stick with the Roma until something better appears. At least theirs are made fresh, unlike most others which have at least a frozen base, if not everything.

Unlike the Dr in his original post, I never trust a local's opinion on non-Egyptian food, as they have no experience of what a good version really should be.
