Heart of Darknesss

Post by carrie »

I have no new books to read so turned to one I have tried to read many times before and never got on with. Well desperation drove me to continue this time and I really enjoyed it when I got into it.
My son was in love with all the novels of Tolkien and I tried to read The Hobbit but couldn't get on with that, once again driven to read it then progressed to all his other books and love them.
What books have others tried to read and failed first time round?

Wilbur Smith's Warlock, I could never read it all the way through even though I took it to Egypt twice and Nigeria on two occasions, finished up listening to it on an audio book. :up

Brilliant book.

Presumably you've read the entire series?

I've tried to read The Hobbit a few times....but can't seem to get into it. Then again, I found the Lord of the Rings trilogy a struggle although the films are brilliant.

Stephen Donaldson was hard to start with. I don't like anything with "flash-backs" or dual time-lines.

But somebody completely unreadable (IMHO) is Stephen King.

I have indeed read the vast majority of his books, I first became a fan back in the early 70’s whilst living in Africa, so his book ‘When the Lion Feeds’ (one of the Courtney series) was my introduction followed by others such as ‘The Sound of Thunder’. I loved all his books that were set in Africa and read the Eyptian ones with gusto, River God, The seventh Scroll and The Quest, but for some reason I became stuck on Warlock, maybe by then I had had enough of Taita. ;)

I can relate to that!

Some people are just so pompous, all-knowing and insufferably self-righteous that they irritate after a while.

We all know people like that ..... :a80:

Stephen Donaldson was a brilliant find for me, countless years ago. Introducing a modern day leper into a story line was a brilliant move, but boy, did you have to wait more countless years for the saga to finally end, and quite a disappointment it was as well.
