ET guide for traffic laws (3): Seatbelt
By: Fatma Al-Wahaidy Mon, Sep. 4, 2017

CAIRO - 4 September 2017: In a knowledge survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010, 75 percent of respondents did not understand the importance of wearing seatbelts; and most said they would have little impact in urban areas due to vehicle density and congestion.

Egypt’s Seatbelt Laws

The seatbelt law in Egypt currently applies to drivers and front-seat passengers only; and according to 2003 statistics by Egypt’s Ministry of Interior, 70 percent of drivers do wear seatbelts.

For the rest of the article: http://www.egypttoday.com/Article/15/20 ... 3-Seatbelt

(interesting/amusing/frightening to read:
'...that 75% of respondents did not understand the importance of wearing seatbelts; and most said they would have little impact in urban areas due to vehicle density and congestion. '
BUT that
'... according to 2003 statistics by Egypt’s Ministry of Interior, 70 percent of drivers do wear seatbelts.' )

:))) :))) :)))

I suspect I have the dubious honour of being one of the very few people fined in Egypt for not wearing my seat belt.

With nearly half a century of driving experience, wearing a belt is second nature to me. I feel uncomfortable driving without one.

How did I come to be fined?

I'd just delivered my cat to the vet and drove out of his courtyard....my mind still on the wretched animal. I had to ease into a slow moving queue of traffic outside and, after about 20 metres, realised why there was a crawl. The police had set up a road check around a curve in the road.

I duly stopped by the officer, with my car & driving licence in hand...only to be told to pull over where it was pointed out that ! wasn't wearing my belt! It had completely gone out of my mind and, what with the cat, and the fact I was doing less than 5 KmpH, out of my mind it stayed!

Oh the shame.....

Unlike some, I'm not privy to 'records' ( ;) ) but it would not surprise me if you were the only person fined for such a crime!

Always amuses me when travelling in a taxi from the east to west bank, on approaching the check point before the bridge the driver always slips his seat belt over his shoulder, not fastened but showing, then as soon as your through the check point off it comes again only to be replaced when approaching the cross road check point leading to the ferry/Gurna road.
Perhaps that's where the statistic 76 percent of drivers wear their seat belts, 100 per cent when they go through check points, 0 percent at any other time.
