This beautiful traditional Russian dance is called Beriozka, and features performers that appear to be floating across the stage. The ladies have to stay en pointe the whole time to maintain the incredible illusion.

There was a dance that the women did, where they wore floor-brushing skirts, and evidently took tiny steps, so they appeared to glide across the stage. Fantastic! I don't know how many of you gentlemen realise just how painful it is for a dancer to be 'en pointe' for any length of time - and the state of their feet when they are older. A bit like the Chinese ladies of old, who had their feet bound when they were tiny children, and when the practice was outlawed, they found that to unbind feet after so long, was so excruciatingly painful that it was best to leave them alone!

That was amazing and beautiful. The pain those women must have endured, and are likely to endure in the future, all for their art, is beyond imagination.
