What if the Sphinx wasn't even built by the Egyptians at all? Its actually order than thought what if it was built by someone else.

Oooh! yes, it may have previously had the head of a lion so that it sat guarding the plateau looking towards the horizon, but some Pharaoh decided to carve his own head on it instead, there again it may have been carved by an advanced alien race from the Leo constellation. It just may have been a particularly bad chunk of limestone that everyone avoided because it was full of flaws and weaknesses in the strata so the builders left it alone, but again it could have been some giant electromagnetic device designed to power the Great Pyramid after dark, we will never know.
Ooops! Sorry folks I have been watching too many programmes on Netflix over Christmas. ;)

My mystery surrounding the Avenue of Sphinx in Luxor is:

It probably took the ancient Egyptians, under the order of some pharaoh or other, years to build. Why is it taking years, and years, and years, now they have been discovered, to finish excavating them and build the necessary bridges and walkways to meet the needs of today?

The mystery to me is why they (Luxor town council or whoever) bothered to unearth these largely headless, weathered lumps of stone....carving a great gash through the town, evicting God knows how many people at God knows what cost.

For what.........??

I agree with the above sentiments, whilst we have/had a reasonable selection of sphinxes in fairly good condition at both ends of the processional route between Luxor and Karnak Temples, this does seem a bit pointless. Such a long route was hardly going to benefit anyone other than a few stalwarts who may like to say they have walked the Opet festival route as the ancient Egyptians did in times gone by. To just excavate a big trench, soon to become full of litter seems a complete waste, how brilliant it could have been with proper planning and funding, an attraction in it’s own right. Imagine it being lined with greenery along the embankment sides, illuminated at night with bridges crossing over it and lots of access points with maybe fountains and features. Being able to take some sort of ecologically friendly ride along the route, or just to walk with places to stop and relax along the way, additional attractions and educational facilities adjacent to the route to diversify the tourism and allow local enterprise to flourish, another string to Luxor’s bow so to speak. So much of a missed opportunity, wasted money and fast becoming another eyesore. :(
