it's not often I post in this section but this caught my eye.

People are free to believe or disbelieve in religion: grand sheikh

The grand sheikh of al-Azhar, Egypt’s highest Islamic authority, said that it is up to individuals, in Islamic law, to decide to believe or disbelieve, in a speech he gave at the German parliament on Tuesday.

Answering the questions of German lawmakers in the Bundestag, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb said there are Egyptian TV stations that discuss and preach atheism without being stopped.

Tayeb's speech at the Bundestag was broadcast on state Egyptian television.

i'm sure I read not so long ago of some guy prosecuted and sentenced to prison in connection with an internet forum allegedly "promoting atheism".

I suppose as with everything in matters such as this the world over, if you are in a high position of power and respect, then what you say or what you believe to be correct, you never get questioned. The lower you are on the social scale, then a different set of rules are applied. Everyone should be shown respect towards their beliefs, thoughts and actions that govern their daily lives. Keeping within the law of course. Will anyone take note of what he says? Doubtful, especially those that have sent people to prison for this ''crime.''
