Tut's Tomb (2)

Not sure I believe this but........

Tantalising news about the 'secret chamber' in Tutankhamun's tomb.

"We do not know if the burial chamber is Nefertiti or another woman, but it is full of treasures." - Egypt's Tourism Minister, Hisham Zaazou.

It seems that some secrets are too good to keep. Is this a phenomenal leak about what lays beyond the false wall in Tutankhamun's tomb? Or is it a clever boost for badly-needed tourism?

Mr. Zaazou claims that the announcement of what lays inside the secret chamber will be made in April. "It will be a 'Big Bang' - the discovery of the 21st century."

It is no secret that I am not into the all the Egyptology 'stuff' but I did watch the Channel 5 programme the other night and found the detective and technology aspect of it all fascinating. Being able to reproduce the surface or the wall to give clues as to changes was very impressive. It will be interesting to know what lies beyond, if anything at all, but it is not something that I personally can get too excited about.

I watched this documentary last night and I was impressed and when Aidon Dodson claimed that the Younger Lady mummy was Nefertiti I couldn't help but reflect to the time when everyone thought she wasn't. I said to myself "hmmm so no one is going to apologize to Joann Fletcher?"

I would trust Aiden's opinion over Joann's when regarding to the Amarna period any day of the year. Horses for courses.

As the DNA analysis (for what it's worth) shows the younger lady to be closely related to the KV 55 skeleton (sister) and to Amenhotep III (daughter ) it is highly unlikely to be Nefertiti who is never attested as " king's daughter ".

I think this sums it up pretty accurately:
(From the Petrie Museum Unofficial Facebook page)

Is it April 1st? Or a peculiar Friday funny?
BEWARE! Health alert. Believing this article will scramble your brains.
FACT 1: Nicholas Reeves - in a thoroughly researched academic paper - has proposed the existence of secondary chambers behind the wall in Tutankhamun's tomb.
FACT 2: Scientific examination suggests that this may be correct.
FACT 3: No attempt to penetrate the wall has yet been made.
FACT 4: The scans have not yet been fully analysed or the results reported
FACT 5: It is more than anyone's job is worth to make any announcement on any possible results until the Ministry makes the official announcement. Any 'excavation team' doing so would be banned from working in Egypt in perpetuity!
FACT 6: There is a reason that Nick Reeves has not made any public comment over and above his original theories - See FACT 5 above!
It's also the reason he hasn't appeared in any cash-in documentaries or self-promotions. This is an attempt to boost tourism by making outrageous claims by the 'Tourism' Minister - there's a clue in his title! Go anyway. Egypt is wonderful. Tutankhamun's tomb is just one tiny blip on some of the world's greatest archaeological sites.
Let's all keep calm and wait for the Ministry announcement.
Quoting Andrea Sinclair "pretty much all they get right [in the article] is the name of the dead guy".

To be fair Akhenaten never used his "King's son" title during his own reign either. It was only used during the time his father was alive.

The name Nefertiti is just short for Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti its not her actually name. Egyptologists just shortened her name because it sounds better than saying Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti and I would agree.

She's not known to be Ay's daughter as well or it would have been known too. Tey was her Wetnurse and usually someone with a wetnurse in those times come from a pretty high status family. Tey had to nursed the girl when she was an infant where else could she could've come from besides the royal family?

Great Royal Wives are almost usually someone very closely to the kings immediate family whether it be sister, daughters or first cousins but not someone completely out of the family. Well sometimes

I stick by this Nefertiti was one of Akhenaten's already attested sisters princess Nebetah who is the younger lady mummy really. Nebetah was the only one not married to her father Amenhotep III and the union between her and Akhenaten was her chance to become queen.

Update on scans of tomb :

On April 2, a new series of radar scans will be performed on King Tutankhamun's tomb to search for hidden chambers that may contain an undiscovered royal burial, Egypt's antiquities ministry has announced.

The announcement comes after stories were published in numerous media outlets last week claiming that Egypt's tourism minister, Hisham Zazou, had told the Spanish news outlet ABC that the chambers had been proven to exist and contain numerous treasures.

"The Ministry of Antiquities has not issued any statement concerning the results that have been reached so far," the ministry said in a statement released to Live Science. "Further radar examinations will be performed on April 2, and a press conference will be held afterwards to announce the results of the scans.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities announced on Thursday that two previously un-discovered chambers were revealed by scans of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

In a press conference, the Ministry said that the two chambers, on the North and Eastern walls of the tomb, contain either metal or organic material, as according to scans carried out by Japanese radar specialist Hirokatsu Watanabu.

New scans will be conducted later this month to determine the exact dimensions of the chambers, said the Ministry.

The revelations come months after Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities said there was a 90 percent chance that a hidden chamber lies behind King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

I recall Hawass was very scathing of the Japanese radar scans....having been burnt by false results a few years ago.

Of course all technologies improve at an exponential rate nowadays so let's hope there are indeed 'things' - wonderful or otherwise - behind those walls.

Seriously speaking I'm not into the history side of this country, but I sincerely hope that it is what they seek, it would be such a pleasant and much needed world headline on the positive side after so long stuck in the negative.
