Flights from UK to Sharm

EasyJet's Sharm el Sheikh flights now on hold until May

EasyJet has extended its suspension of flights to Sharm el Sheikh until May 27, stating that it wanted to “provide some certainty for passengers” booked to fly to the Red Sea resort.

In a statement, the no-frills airline, which announced the change on Tuesday, said customers affected could either arrange a voucher for the value of the original flights or receive a full refund of the flights booked.

The UK government first suspended flights to Sharm el Sheikh on November 4, following the suspected downing of a Russian passenger plane.

TTG understands from industry sources that a government delegation set out to assess Sharm el Sheikh airport last week, although the Department for Transport said it was unable to comment on security matters.

Commenting on the latest decision by easyJet, a DfT spokesperson said the government’s suspension of flights was “constantly under review”.

“It’s a question of if and when it [Sharm el Sheikh airport] meets our standard,” she added.

She confirmed that a change to the current UK-wide suspension of flights to the resort was “not imminent”.

As of late December, both Thomson and Thomas Cook said it would not be returning to Sharm el Sheikh “up to and including March 23”, pending government advice.

British Airways has suspended flights until March 26, while Monarch has said its flights will remain suspended until at least February 14.

I think everyone is waiting for the results of the investigation into the Russian Plane Crash before they will consider flights. At the moment this seems to be dragging along.

I think it's more a case of waiting for the review of security procedures at airports.

The airlines and foreign governments made up their minds as to the cause of the crash within hours and even if it turns out not to be terrorist - related, the die is cast.

I read it as March 2023 and March 2026 - it wasn't until I got to Feb 14 that I realised the dates were back to front.

When I mean results of the plane crash, I take in security measures, because it was this crash that caused the security to be looked at. I would consider the two run hand in hand.

Monarch has cancelled its programme until October 30 but said that it would like to resume flights when the effective ban is lifted.

The company has added extra flights to the Canary Islands, the Algarve, Palma, Malaga and is offering a variety of rebooking options.

Thomson and First Choice are cancelling flights and holidays until September 30.

Two Thomson Airways flights have been retained in the schedule to enable the business to operate to Sharm el Sheikh should the FCO travel advice change.

These are:

TOM396/7 from London Gatwick to Sharm el-Sheikh from May 26-October 27, at 13.50
TOM572/3 from Manchester to Sharm el Sheikh from May 26 – October 27 at 14.25

Rival Cook has already cancelled all bookings to the Red Sea resort and will not resume operations until November 1 at the earliest.

The FCO’s decision to effectively put a halt on flights came after the suspected bombing of a Russia charter flight, which killed 224 people.
