Judging by the state of the current railway track between Qena and Safarga I am not optimistic. But will wait to see what happens!

It was only ever used very rarely for freight, and after the revolution the track has been scavanged for scrap. The same with the track from Qena to Kharga.

There is an unfinished line to the coast. I wonder if they will use that? Or rip it up and use the excavated route? If it happens, not wanting to sound pessimistic, but.....

Unfortunately, Memorandums of Understanding as signed by all Egyptian governments past and present have rarely come to fruition in the form they first set out, or as in most cases the other nation pulls out. The British, French and U.S.A., know only too well.

If it ever gets built it will probably end up being something dreamt up by the writer of Thomas the Tank Engine, or worse :wi :wi :wi .

Surely the route - if it ever happens - will be down Wadi Hammamat from Qena to Quseir?

Can't see them blasting a track through the tortuous mountain pass on the route from Qena to Safaga.

Not that they wouldn't try.... :urm:

The only route I remember for such a railroad in the past was when the international developers of Marsa Alam and the then Mubarack administration signed a, wait for it,............'Memorandum of Understanding',....that was to build a railroad between there and Edfu, in the end, I think they got a road.

More excitement for you trainspotters !!!!

Egypt`s first Monorail will be in service starting from Mid 2018.

Egypt’s first monorail is set to become operational in mid-2018, announced Egypt’s Minister of Housing.

The monorail, which will be established by the Egyptian-Canadian consortium, will connect areas of October 6 and Sheikh Zayed with Giza and Cairo.

According to the Housing Ministry, the move is intended to boost efficiency of transport and will include a total of 17 stations, reported MENA news agency.

The $US 1.5 billion project will include involvement of the Bombardier Transportation Canada Incorporated. Representatives of Bombardier Transportation Canada had met with government officials in 2014 to discuss ways to develop Egypt’s railway systems to provide Egyptians with higher quality transportation services.

The Egyptian companies Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction Industries are also involved in the implementation of the monorail project.

Egypt’s rail system, particularly the metro, have become increasingly popular among civilians hoping to avoid Cairo’s highly congested roads. According to the World Bank, Cairo’s infamous traffic costs USD 6.5 billion annually.

Greater Cairo, which includes Giza, October 6 and Sheikh Zayed, is home to 19.6 million people making it the largest share of population, economy, industry and human resources in Egypt.

I think a chairlift system would be well received in Luxor. Aerial views of the Temples and Tombs, city life, no hassle and I could drop peanuts onto the carriage drivers heads. :up

this would certainly help if it ever happens as you can get cheaper flights to hurgarda from Manchester although I often wonder why they never thought to put a flight from hurgarda to luxor I am sure it would help tourism they do a flight to cairo so what is the difference

Ask Smart Aviation. They used to run this service but have now gone charter only.

"The Regular flights are currently unavailable and we're working now on a charter basis only until further notification."

I have heard that the biggest problem is the taxes charged to use Luxor Military Airport.

I was told it was due to objections by the taxi trade, private car hires and buses who would all lose too much business. I would travel back and 2 a lot more often if there was an available flight from Hurghada to Luxor
