Which News Resource?

Post by HEPZIBAH »

Which are the best news resources to refer to when looking for news about Egypt?

Do you stick firmly with any particular news paper, website or T.V channel?
Do you only follow English language news or do you try to follow translations of Arabic news?
What are your favourites, and why?

I use the BBC, despite the fact that I appose a lot of what they do/don't do.

They are politically biased which is absolutely disgraceful in a tax payer funded organisation.

I don't pay for their upkeep to have them practice political favour.

I don't trust most foreign news sources in the region because they are forever publishing a story and retracting it and/or being proven inaccurate and wrong.

I find it quite funny that when the BBC has a story on Egypt that's perceived as negative there are some on here who say they are biased.

Doesn't stop the same people quoting the BBC when the story isn't negative :tk

Al Ahram on paper

BBC/Aljazeera on telly.

I've learned to treat them all with caution.

All news in Egypt is so controlled and, as Z says, often contradicted within hours

I watch a variety of news channels, but gone are the days when there was ''news.'' Now its all the same, mini documentaries about terrorist groups, how many where killed, how many are missing, who's taken what ground back, we have managed to wipe out one of IS's top commanders... oops sorry, it wasn't, just a family holding a wedding. [political satire before those know insurgents start hammering the keys]

The best news articles I find are via Facebook pages dedicated to archaeology. They appear daily and are often more recent, detailed, factual and have more images.

We use a variety of Channels, Press TV is good, but we mainly use Sky News HD, we used to use Al Jezeera, but it got too bias after the problems with their journalists recently so we stopped using it. But the OSN Platinum deal give you many opportunity's for a lot of news channels. We both like to relax in front of TV in the Evenings so for us this package is ideal.

For news on Egypt we use Al Arham online, its very informative.

We are not using the English News Channels just at the moment because we are sick of the General Election spew!!! There seems to be the conclusion there will be a Hung Parliament but we will have to wait and see. I predict there will be a Labour Government and the UK will go back to borrowing cash and the Country will go back to the dark days before this Government, Borrow, Borrow, Borrow, Bust!!!! No Jobs again, People loosing their homes, poverty, and all the rubbish that goes with it. It the Austerity the UK is going through at the moment that is paying for the last Governments reckless policies. To me I would sooner go through Austerity and get the Country back on its feet again, rather than go deeper and deeper into the mire. Surely the average person in the UK should realise this, you cannot spend spend spend, get yourself into trouble and not have to pay for it later. Its what I call "The Labour Credit Card" you have a ceiling, you go above it and still keep on spending, totally reckless. Then what happens? You complain like mad when the trouble hits your doorstep.

I once did a project on the miner's strike in the UK, for one week I read every newspaper I listened to the radio all the TV channels, made a list of the main point each were making and found tht very few agreed all were promulgating their own point of view. Now I am very sceptical,

I forgot to include my magazine subscriptions: Ancient Egypt, Current World Archaeology (both UK), Archaeology (US), Archaeological Diggings (Aust) and KMT. Though, by their bi-monthly or monthly nature they are not as immediate, but more lengthy and with more images; good as a follow-up to a number of the Fb items.

Not decrying your interests Winged Isis, but that I would consider to be ''old news.'' Like several thousand years. I like current news that may just impact my and others futures or lives. Old bones and colourfull pictures just don't cut it for me.

When the Miners Strike was on, I worked for the then NCB, although the Miners were on strike I was one of the few that had to work with being on management. We had to keep the mine water pumps going to stop mines getting flooded and to keep the ventilation going to stop the build up of toxic gasses under ground. Many was the time I therefore had to go through Picket Lines with my little card.

When you spoke to the striker there was a mixed selection of views, there were those who were made poor because of the fact others put pressure on them to stay out, there were those that would stay out even though it made their families poor, there were plenty that wanted to return to work but were afraid to do so because of the word Blackleg. Some even had their homes broken into and wrecked, others had their cars vandalized, it was terrible. And then looked what happened, the mines were closed and many of them lost their jobs and careers. Who do you blame, 50/50 I suppose, but many areas were devastated for many years to follow, and many people were out of work for many months to follow.

As do I, Dusak, but there is room for the old too, from which we can learn and plan for the future, particularly in medical areas, as I'm sure you know. Which part of my reply indicates I only read news of archaeology? Perhaps your tongue was in your cheek? ;)

But that is not relevant to the question first asked, and my reply was.

Spoken like a true blue tory, pretty easy for you too say when your retired to a land of sunshine and lounging. Your not having to struggle living with this austerity, working on a 0 hours contract, having to rely on charity foodbanks to eat and be like a lot of working people here living below the poverty line! More so people like myself who are disabled (mine due to a work related injury) who are hit hard by having their benefits cut again and again. So why not think before spouting all this tory rhetoric and diatribe that the AVERAGE PERSON is far worse off than you sitting in your ivory tower, sunbathing whilst we all are suffering. Come back and live here and see if you still feel the same.

I'm not sure which post Who2 is agreeing with. Personally I am not, and have never been a Tory, true blue or otherwise, but I would vote for any candidate who kept Labour out of power. While I sympathise with Darkstar I don't accept that he would be better off under Labour. Austerity is working. I hope for another, similar coalition, as the Conservatives do need to be kept in check.

The way I see it, no matter who is in power, you will get a **** life, [the average working man] and one that will only get worse as each year passes. I thank god that I'm able to enjoy the rewards of my UK working life over here. I consider myself very fortunate. You Darkstar are a genuine claimant of the system but unfortunately a victim of all those thieving, robbing barstewads of past years that milked the land of its milk and honey, leaving very little for the likes of yourself and other genuine deserving cases.

I use Twitter and follow most of the Egyptian newspaper feeds e.g. Egypt Independent, Daily News Egypt, Ahram Online, Egypt today, Luxor Times etc plus BBC & Sky News and a few individual reporters from Egypt & UK. That gives a pretty wide range of cover.

If I swapped Twitter for Facebook (and there is a lot of overlap there anyway) my list would probably be pretty much the same as above. I don't avidly look at them all every day but I dip in and out according to any headline I may have seen or situation heard about. I find using an on-line search is useful in some circumstances too.

The trouble with Twitter is you can only report or tweet small items. When I used to use it I often run out of space.
