I'm sure I met this lady about 20 years ago....... the local people seemed to regard her with amused tolerance as far as I could see. She was very well known and the usual comment was, "What can she do? She has children to feed."
There's another woman who has a great work ethic in the Souk. I buy all my DIY tools from her. She sits in the sun all day when the men have retreated to the shadows for a smoke, is polite and fairly priced. Because she is fair, sometimes I give her extra, in spite of her protests. The only way to silence her is to say it's for the children.

I read an article about this woman a while back and was full of admiration for her. Have to add that I was also sad that she found herself in a situation where she had to do it - but more power to her for taking the initiative and doing all she could, no matter that it was menial, to earn money for her family rather than sit in the gutter with her hand out.

I am surprised that anyone noticed. Many if not most Egyptian men dress as women. The galabeya is a great equaliser!

Curiously enough when I first met the lady in question, she was wearing baggy black trousers, a white man's shirt untucked and a white turban - she would easily have passed for a poor young man. Charmingly shy though.

And you could say every woman in jeans in the UK dresses like a man Brian, so what's your point?

Except when they are walking towards you upstream in a high wind. Sometimes its anything but an equalizer.

One of my all-time favourites I could watch it anytime, we all have to work…..

Ps: it reminds me of the beggar woman with the kid opposite the Ibrotel, took me a few years to realise the baby never got any older….
