Egyptian police impound almost 3 million firework shells.

The trade and use of fireworks is prohibited in Egypt, although fireworks displays are nonetheless a common sight.

Police confiscated almost three million illegal fireworks shells, often deployed as a weapon during street clashes, from a warehouse in Cairo on Friday, state news agency MENA reported.

The fireworks, banned in Egypt, were found in 400 boxes in a warehouse belonging to a 28-year-old man, who was arrested and will be questioned by prosecutors on Saturday.

Police told MENA the suspect confessed to intending to trade the fireworks.

Despite the ban on trading and using fireworks, it is common in Egypt for fireworks to be launched in celebrations, including on occasions celebrating the country's two revolutions.

The security vacuum that followed the 2011 revolution saw a sharp increase in the distribution and use of fireworks in Egypt.

You learn something new everyday :) I wonder how many Egyptians know that fireworks are banned in Egypt?

Does that mean we will get some peace on the West Bank, relieved by the fireworks in Luxor most nights.

Fireworks make a different sound than of AK47, which is the sound normally heard on the WB…

You are lucky they go off so far away, LP. Here they go off all around us. I don't even normally notice the sound of the multiple nightly fireworks anymore, but last night I jumped because some were going off directly across the street and light travels faster than sound so I saw the white light flash through the window before I heard it. There were even some going off this morning on the corner at 7am.

Makes the Ramadan bomba of years past look so quaint.

I think they are the fireworks for wedding celebrations GD, not sure, but surely they will not stop these?

I think there are more AK47's on the West Bank than the whole of ISIL own. It seems all the locals have got one.

Here the fireworks are without reason. They just shoot them off every night now for about 3 years. Happens all over Cairo.

2 weeks ago back of Gezira on Sat night was a big party it went on longer than normal, but with fireworks one expects 'oohs and ash's and brilliant illuminations this was pistol and the odd automatic fire, anyhow I love fireworks always have done, I didn't know that they were illegal but to be honest it makes sense. As a nipper we used to make very effective pipe-bombs…and without the help of the Chinese…

The implementation of this total ban country wide would be a good thing, one on par with the total blanket ban on football, and footballs. :up
