Egypt's top prosecutor ordered Saturday seven men detained and physically examined over accusations of "debauchery," a charge often leveled at gays, after a video emerged of a same-sex wedding party, the state news agency reported.

A statement from the prosecutor's office said the suspects are also accused of broadcasting footage that "violates public decency," ordering them detained for four days and urging investigators to refer them to trial swiftly "to protect social values and mete out justice."

In Egypt, consensual same-sex relations are not explicitly prohibited, but other laws have been used to imprison gay men in recent years, including "debauchery" or "shameless public acts."

In April, four men were convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for debauchery after holding parties that involved homosexual acts where women's clothing and makeup were found.

In 2001, Egypt grabbed world attention when 52 men were arrested in a police raid on a Nile boat restaurant and accused of taking part in a gay sex party. After a highly publicized trial in an emergency state security court, 23 of the men were convicted and sentenced to prison terms of one to five years for immoral behavior and contempt of religion.

In the Saturday case, the state news agency said that police are still looking for two more men involved in the incident. The statement described the video, which appeared online, as showing "a devilish shameless party" where two of the men were getting married. The prosecutor said the video dates back to April.

Mmmm, I agree it was very foolish given the attitudes that prevail but....

The fact that its described as a "debauchery" just shows that in regards to this, Egypt isnt stuck in the 20th century, its much further behind than that.

We are hardly talking Sodem & Gomarrah here are we?

Men from same-sex wedding video are 'not gay': Forensics

Egypt's forensics authority announced on Monday that the seven men arrested for "debauchery" were physically inspected and were found to be "not gay".

The seven suspects were arrested and accused of debauchery after an online video emerged of an alleged same-sex wedding on a Nile party boat.

"According to inspection, the seven suspects have never had sex with other men," Hisham Abdel-Hamid, spokesman for the forensic authority, said to the media on Monday.

Abdel-Hamid also said that the eighth suspect, who played the role of the groom in the alleged video, didn't show up for the physical inspection.

Prosecutor-General Hisham Barakat ordered suspects to be detained for four days pending investigations into them broadcasting footage that "violates public decency."

Barakat also issued an arrest warrant for two other suspects in the video, which dates back to April, according a statement from the prosecution.

Human rights lawyer Malek Adly denounced the prosecution's order to physically inspect the suspects as a violation of privacy and human rights.

"Homosexuality is not explicitly incriminating in Egyptian law but the government uses other laws instead," Adly told Ahram Online.

This reminds me so much of something I read recently that used to happen to young girls and women in the UK who were arrested on things such as 'suspected' soliciting and prostitution charges. I can't remember the exact wording used but it amounted to legally being raped by officials using medical instruments such as a speculum (but also other non medical equipment depending on the mood of the duty doctor and police officer.
