Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi donated LE500,000 on Monday to a bank account he recently opened to field donations to improve the country's ailing economy, a statement from the presidency said.

El-Sisi went to the Heliopolis branch of the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) to make his deposit, the statement said.

The bank account, titled Long Live Egypt, was launched after a speech given by El-Sisi on 24 June asking Egyptians to donate money to help Egypt through its current economic crisis.

Egypt's current domestic debt stands at LE1.7 trillion.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehlab said earlier he would donate half his monthly salary and a part of his wealth to the initiative.

Saudi prince and business tycoon Talal bin Abdul-Aziz has donated 1 million Saudi riyals ($266,630) to the Long Live Egypt fund.
