Major Russian tourist companies are looking to resume trips to Egypt's Red Sea resorts, according to Maged al-Qady, adviser to the head of the Red Sea tourist chamber.

Meetings and consultations with Russian officials are currently underway, Qady added, saying that Russian tours to the area would resume on 20 September.

He added that this decision was reached after a delegation toured Hurghada for several days to assesss the security situation there. The travel ban imposed by Russian authorities on visits to Egypt will be completely lifted before the start of the winter season, Qady claimed.

Around 80 Russian tourist companies will resume charter flights to Egypt at the end of September.

The Russian Foreign Ministry imposed a travel ban to Egypt following the dispersal of the sit-ins in Rabaa al-Adaweya and al-Nahda Square. Egypt receives around 2.5 million Russian tourists a year.

Pity the UK Government can't do the same for Luxor. We are even further away from Cairo.

Granted a tourist is a tourist is a tourist but it would be interesting to know the spending of tourists from different countries.

WHO actually spends the most and puts the most into the country?

If Russian tourists, for instance, actually flock to the big chain hotels and hang about the pools they're not apt to be contributing much to the local economy. Be interesting to know who is putting the most $$ back into the local economy to keep it going.

Well any tourist does contribute whether directly or indirectly via the hotels buying stock etc and the staff having a job and spending.

@ Bombay - yeah I agree. Was just thinking more along the lines of tourists who come and rent flats, buy direct from sellers vs the tourists who stay in the chain hotels. Sure the hotels hire locals but am thinking that some types of tourists are paying more direct cash into the local economies than others. Be interesting to know which ones.......

I think that tourists staying in hotels will generate more than those renting flats just because of the sheer numbers involved. Certainly works (worked) that way in Luxor.
