That bastion of democracy and human rights, Saudi Arabia has come out in strong support of the Egyptian Military.
It seems that Egypt has merely reverted to pre-2011, but just in a diffferent form ie without Mubarak.
The democratic process seems dead and in any case is likely to be heavily controlled by the military, which isn't democracy of course, especially when protestors are shot dead for protesting.
We have to ask ourselves whether the last two or three years have been worth it, when we are back at square one with huge instability and a few thousand deaths...
Ok to put it bluntly, would anyone welcome the return of a Mubarak-style government, as it seems that is what Egypt has now?

I'll give it a little while to see how things pan out, but if the choice really is between the army and the MB I prefer the former.

I think many Egyptians would, many were not happy he had gone and one of his men Shafiq was nearly voted in last year.TAL777 wrote:That bastion of democracy and human rights, Saudi Arabia has come out in strong support of the Egyptian Military.

Which would be a reversion to the Mubarak years, and I think many Egyptians would go for that. It would certainly suit the US and Saudis and other financial backers who seem to be pulling many strings.Brian Yare wrote:I'll give it a little while to see how things pan out, but if the choice really is between the army and the MB I prefer the former.
The other alternative would be a civil insurgency as Algeria had in the 1990s, which would close Egypt down for several years.
We can live in hope though, sooner or later people will have to sit round a table and talk and that will have to include the MB if we want peace..
If you look at Afghanistan, the US eventually had to sit down and talk to the Taliban as they weren't going to just go away, the same goes for the MB..

I do not see it as a reversion to the Mubarak years. I believe that the army is committed to the drafting of a new constitution and the election of a new government. I hope that my belief is justified.TAL777 wrote:Which would be a reversion to the Mubarak years, and I think many Egyptians would go for that.Brian Yare wrote:I'll give it a little while to see how things pan out, but if the choice really is between the army and the MB I prefer the former.

Re: Saudi Arabia supports Egypt Military
It is not back to the Mubarak era because of one enormous change in Egyptians since the revolution:
Egyptians are no longer frightened, as they had been for 30+ years. This is the genie that has been
released from the bottle and will never be put back inside. It might cause all sorts of problems,
but ultimately I believe it will be their strength.

Re: Saudi Arabia supports Egypt Military
Well I did predict problems, especially aka MB when Mubarak was deposed. Ok, he was a "dictator" but, sadly that is what is needed in countries like Egypt, democracy will just never work.
Now it has gone back one step worse TAL and Egypt is under full military control, with all that involves, indeed it is not in their interest or that of the Saudis to ever have a truly democratic regime, the writing is on the wall I'm afraid, having witnessed Saudi law in action in Riyadh for myself AKA "chop" square, I dread to think where Egypt is heading now.
I hope and pray that I will be proved wrong, but right now I fear for the future of Egypt.

I don't have a plan......so nothing can go wrong!

Although however much you, or anybody else, dislike the MB they aren't just going to go away are they? They do have alot of support in Egypt particularly in rural areas and they will have to be included in any future political landscape..Brian Yare wrote:I do not see it as a reversion to the Mubarak years. Furthermore, the third player in all of this, after the Military and MB are the original Revolutonaries and they will have to get their act together, organise themselves and unify somehow behind a single figurehead, if this is ever going to happen..

The MB could practice what they preach, and disappear as martyrs. Every last one of them.
It won't happen, but is an attractive scenario.
