Some 6.3 million families had home internet access in 2012, according to Egypt's official statistics agency, while 96 percent of Egyptian households owned at least one mobile phone.
One third of Egyptian households had internet access in 2012, three million more than in 2011, Egypt's official statistics agency CAPMAS announced on Saturday.
Following ten years of gradually increasing internet penetration, national Internet use spiked following Egypt's January 2011 revolution, growing by 17 percent in a single year to reach 31 million by July 2012, according to a report issued last year by Boston Consulting Group.
Egypt's total population, meanwhile, reached 83 million in 2012, representing some 18.9 million households, according to CAPMAS.
In 2012, 18.2 million households – or 96 percent of the total – owned at least one mobile phone, compared to 17.9 million in 2011, CAPMAS reported on the occasion of World Information Society Day on 18 May.
The statistics agency also revealed that virtually 100 percent of Egyptian households owned a television set as of 2012.
