Hatshepsut restaurant/coffee shop

Post by LivinginLuxor » Fri Mar 29, 2013 8:47 am

I hardly ever visit what are known as coffee shops, as is well known, I'm partial to the occasional Stella. However, this has changed over the last few weeks, as Hatshepsut was recommended to me. I had a cold, so I thought fresh lemon juice would help, so I walked over to it - it is about 20 yards from where I live, opposite the end of Senmut Street, on the Nile bank. While there for the first time, I tried their Kofta sandwich - excellent, another time, liver, another time a burger, and yesterday a chicken shawerma sandwich - the best so far. All the food is fresh daily, and Emad is a great cook. Value for money excellent, and a great place to relax with a book by the river.

I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

We go there often for a mixed grill and always end up bringing home a doggy bag as there is just so much meat on our plates. Excellent food, I also recommend this place :up

Used to be Ali Barba's yes agree L in L Emad is brilliant and the prices are spot on, I too love the Kofta. Emad has been there a few years now, I believe his father owns the property.

I ate there on my last night in Luxor this winter (17th March). Food was excellent and in excessive quantity. The liver sandwich L£10 was to die for. They do not mind if you bring your own alcohol.

And I had a £E10 kofta sandwich the other night. One of those torpedo shaped rolls with kofta and some cheesy sauce. No complaints from me.

Is it really against local laws to take your own booze into a dry restaurant?

Brian - are you sure it was Hapshepsut as the sandwiches there are in the Egyptian flat breads, opened into pockets?

LiL

Yes it was Hatspepsut, I had flatbread on the previous visit, but this week we had torpedo rolls. Variety is the spice ...

Yes it is even states this on the FCO travel advice to Egypt.

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advic ... nd-customs

"Drinking alcohol in the street and anywhere other than a licensed restaurant or bar is not allowed and can lead to arrest."

:ni: I wonder why they sell duty free alcohol, when it is against the law to drink it. I broke the law this morning, having a Fernet Branca (medical reasons, of course) in my home.
PLEASE, don't tell anyone.. :worry:

We are being warned that things are about to change and we might be arrested, so I wonder where I stand.

To be fair to Bombay, he was making a direct quote from the UK FCO website.

My interpretation of what may have been translated incorrectly would be:

"Drinking alcohol in the street and any PUBLIC PLACE other than a licensed restaurant or bar is not allowed and can lead to arrest."

However I have copied what it states on the FCO site.

I have checked and it also applies to being "drunk in public"
the penalty is 18 months in jail.

I am not attacking Bombay, but commenting on the quote, as according to UK FCO you are not allowed to drink anywhere other than a licensed restaurant. It was news to me, but I am not from UK, so sorry to joining the debate. :wi Thank you for reminding me, HEPZIBAH, I just checked UM.DK and it does not mention alcohol at all. :wi

So, what will be the visiting times for the drunken sailors of the expat community? I know one thing, Luxor will be much quieter when they initiate the rule. Could be a good little earner for you Bombay in relation to takeaways as this would probable shut half the restaurants. :D

Keefy,

This appears to have gone a little off-topic!

As they all do Brian, that way more topics are covered at once. :up I was wondering to ask about the road sweepers, but then I remembered that I'd asked the question before in the kitchen corner.
