Breakfast in Luxor...

The bacon sarni is famously named after John Montagu, the fourth earl of Sandwich. It's said that the earl, busy with a game of cards, ordered his servant to bring him meat held between two pieces of bread, so that he didn't have to stop to eat a proper meal. It's a good story, but the dish probably has a far older history....:cool:

Black Pudding and HP sauce to finish it off nicely..My usual elevenses during the working week. 2 Quid a pop !! :up

The other half has just delivered 6 slices of Toast and Marmalde to my desk, :cool:
Hope she brings the cup of tea soon, I'm on my 3rd slice and its getting hard to swallow.. :cg

Actually the idea of meat in bread is far far older. Part of a loaf (stale normally) used to be hollowed out and filled with meats and vegetables and served, it was called a trencher. (A bit like the modern kibab) You ate the contence first then the bread which had become soft from the juices. This later became the meat serving dish or plate of the same name.
