New Luxor Medical Center

Just had a tour of the new Luxor Medical Center situated in St Joseph Street. Well worth a visit and to know that there is a very modern facility if I should need medical attention. The centre has in patient and out patient care, operating theatre, ICU bed, recovery room and Xray facility. The fees are very reasonable. I would recommend a visit to check it out.

Two commercials for this private clinic catering for Europeans? Is this the same place that asked for slim, attractive female staff? Believe it or not, there are good hospitals in the Luxor area - the new local hospital on the corniche gives excellent service as a friend found when she broke her arm. The small hospital in Qurna, the only one I have personal experience of, is excellent.

I also visited recently and I saw only 4 female staff out of a total of about 20 staff. I was told that the Centre is available to everybody regardless of Nationality. For once why don't you get your facts right?

Agree Stan the small hospital at Gourna is very effective, I dont know the hospital on the cornishe unless you mean the General near the Etap?

That one Choc was the old fever hospital built by, believe it or not Thomas Cook. About twenty years ago, I had the dis-pleasure of having to stay in a room there for four days. To this day, I can still hear that fan whirring noise, every five seconds,.......what I would have given for a can of WD 40.

With regards to this new place, I think we can all agree that a hospital is only as good as its staff.

What are the fees? Quite a few of us recently have had various experiences in 3 different Luxor hospitals. We'd like to compare prices.

40le to see a GP other costs depend on the treatment. And Stan I am not advertising this place just saying that I had found it and was very impressed. If I am sick then I am not going to traipse over to Gurna hospital and the one on the corniche, although recently renovated, I have heard such bad reports on (from Egyptians) that I would not go there either. This new place is just another option.

Sabah, I logged on this morning to find out information on just this subject!! I am relocating to the West Bank later this year; and have almost dotted the 't's and crossed the 'i's on most of the stuff I need to be aware of for living there, one of those still to be addressed was/is healthcare. I am presently living in Turkiye where the healthcare is excellent, but very very expensive......for residents who are not turkish citizens. I know most of the Doctors in the area of Ramlah, especially Dr Boutros who has always provided me with excellent and practical health information and care when I've been in situ there. To know and read that the hospital in Qurna is 'excellent' is very comforting, as I've heard horror stories about this establishment...not having visited myself before. And to read about the new medical centre in Luxor, (albeit not so positive news), and other hospitals on the East Bank is also comforting. I would be interested to know if any ex-pats have any private medical insurance they could recommend? I have spoken to folk there on various occasions, and, from what I understand it's not worth the paper it's written on, but I am sure that there are improvements all the time, bearing in mind the amount of ex-pats and long term visitors during the winter this area hosts. Any information you can provide would be welcomed.

I had to visit this new clinic the other day, taking a friend for medic care, was very impressed with the service and state of the art equipment. The prices that i was quoted were excellent value for money in my opinion. They officially open next week when all costings will be available to take away. They are also going to offer their own medical insurance packages. It was stated that this is their 2nd/ 3/rd clinic to open and that the owner has 40 small clinics in 40 hotels around Egypt. All staff speak good English, they operate 24/7 using highly qualified Drs and consultants, Professors. It is a comfort to know that if i suddenly drop dead there would be a place of this quality to attempt a revival.

Thank you Dusak, that's excellent news!! without our health all the beauty and wonders of the world are nothing.......health IS the most important thing in our life. I plan to visit this centre, and the one in Qurna, to get a feel of both centres and collect the take away info as you say the one in Luxor will be providing by the time I arrive, in cha allah. Armed with this news I am even more excited and happy and looking forward to the next chapter of my life.

40LE to see a GP is a very good price. The last time I saw Dr Boutross the consultstion cost 100LE. I was shocked because it had gone up from 50LE. (however he is an excellent doctor). I had excellent treatment at the small Gurna hospital when I hurt my leg badly getting on to a motorboat. I saw an orthopaedic surgeon last year too regarding my shoulder - an xray was 50LE and the consultation 100LE.

Yes, Dr B can be a little pricey but he's great!! not only does he have a wonderful bedside manner but he's honest and doesn't give you any flannel just plain good old fashioned 'doctor' advise, I would swear by him personally!! I think he would be open to negotiation on his fees IF one had to visit him often. But sometimes we cannot put a price on a healthy state of mind, which is what he gave me as much as the treatment and medical expertise. If other's think he's great then it's not just me This is all very good news for me today, so thanks again guys for your time and reports.

100le to see Dr Boutros? Again, I'm glad to live on the East Bank!

Perhaps the new place is charging 40le because they don't feel it wise to go very much higher than the competition here on the East. Our excellent Dr Yacoub Geris is currently charging 33le, but doesn't charge neighbours or poor people, as long as they are willing to wait till the end of surgery. I've taken several English friends to him (no, no baksheesh I'm afraid) and they've all been highly satisfied.

I think most ex pats in Luxor also have an address in the UK so if they fall ill they can go back for free medical care or operations they may require. They thought it all out before moving here.

Only if they are over pension age CE, & I don't know if that still applies if they have been out of the country for 6 months.

We are hoping that the new centre will provide opthalmic care, I imagine it will be a lot cheaper than the UK at £150 per appointment & of course on the doorstep.

Yes, you are right FabLux, those is the conditions at this present moment (FOR PEOPLE LIVING OUTSIDE EUROPE)!
As said before on previous post, NHS has all relevant info for receiving healthcare in UK.

NHS staff are overworked and underpaid for work they do already for bona-fide patients who reside in the UK and pay their taxes and NI!
Anyone planning to come back to UK for medical treatment should have private healthcare insurance!
Would any tourist get free healthcare in Egypt?
Very much doubt it!
Fablux,I once went to Ophthalmologist in Luxor (thought I might be able to get specs cheaper there!)
I got basic "sight test!"No checks for glaucoma,retinal problems,or anything else!
Specs I got there were nice...but I shoulda waited and gone to Specsavers,would've got them cheaper!

Scottishtourist, That's not the whole story though is it? Most people who live abroad have paid tax and NI for most of their lives. And many still pay taxes in the UK on rented properties, savings or whatever. Yet they've only got to be abroad for a few months and their entitlement to free health care stops. Yet anybody from an EU country can claim free Health Care in the UK regardless of the fact that they may never have put a single penny in the pot. Does that seem fair to you? I know that to date I've certainly put more in than I've taken out and I'd prefer it to stay that way. But I do resent the fact that after all I have paid I can be denied any entitlement just because I like to have extended holidays abroad. And I would imagine I'm not the only one who holds that view.


Oh, and of course we wouldn't expect to get free health care in Egypt. Not even Egyptians get that because they don't have an NHS or equivalent! Europeans do, however, have to pay far more than Egyptians do. But I daresay Egyptians would get free Health Care in England if they needed it.

But why should an already overstretched NHS provide care for anyone who has decided not to live in the UK?
What's an extended holiday?Does that mean you have all the benefits of living in a country with a far cheaper standard of living than you can expect in UK...but still want all the benefits that the "home country"can bring?

ST glasses aren't the issue, it is the actual glaucoma monitoring that we hope to get done here. There is a centre in Hampshire (Optegra) that Barry can go to. It was set up by the consultant he used to attend when we lived in Hampshire, but its a long way from here! One visit is OK but, especially if they change the treatment, they want to do regular follow up checks, & that would mean frequent return visits. If they have the relevant consultants here that would be perfect.

Incidentally paying tax & NI isn't even the criteria, even though I was paying both whilst working here for a UK company, when I returned to the UK after 6 months out (during which I had continued to pay both) I was told technically I was no longer eligible for NHS treatment
