That's not the statue in the photo but I have seen a photo of it and it is real.

What an amazing site that funerary temple is. Still so much to be found beneath the sands I'm sure. Can't wait to see a photograph of the latest statue found.

No - as it is illegal here to take photos of ongoing excavations!!!! And also by the fact that they are now covered in white 'canvas'. From what I can gather the statue is broken, but when restored will be about 44 ft tall.
On another tack, has anyone else heard the rumour that the fallen colossi of Rameses II is to be raised and restored? I think I prefer it the way it is.

A French team digitally scanned all the pieces some 6/7 years ago and worked out that there was very little missing, and with the aid of a computer program, how it could be put back together. The only thing stopping it happening at that time was lack of finance, if I remember.

OK, so no current photos then.
If you are talking about Abu Simbel then I believe it should be left where it is. It was considered at the time it was raised I understand and they decided against it. A case of conservation not restoration.

I'm thinking Stan means Memphis. If so, I'm with you, Stan! I
love the fact you can get up close and personal with "the man". I especially love being able to see the details of his face so clearly, particularly his mouth. It has always fascinated me how a lump of rough stone can be transformed so. I love watching sculptors at work, releasing the image from within, and how they read the raw material.

I think Stan might be referring to the one at the Ramesseum on the West Bank in Luxor.

That's the one! I think it is much more interesting in its broken form - something romantic about it. And if it was restored, you couldn't be able to sit on the giant feet anymore.
There were thoughts of restoring the second statue at Abu Simbel when it was rebuilt, but common sense ruled!

I heard that the farmer who originally ploughed it up was furious. A shabti or two is good, even a 1 metre statue might be sold or illegally exported, but what do you do with a 14 metre statue!

Most of the land that these finds are being made on were already acquired for the de-watering project pipeline. I was told over a year ago that most of the locations for these "newly discovered" statues were well documented and I saw the plans showing the locations at that time but was sworn to secrecy.
