I read the journey of Ibn Fatouma by Naguib Mafouz on the plane the other day, it's a fairly slim volume easily read a few hours.

I was fascinated to find that it was written in the 1980's. It could well have been a collection of parables to advise post revolutionary Egypt.

Has anyone else read it? What do you think? :)

I agree the Cairo Trilogy makes a good start. I haven't read everything he wrote yet, but like all that I have read. I think maybe Sugar Street is my favourite, cerrtainly the one that springs to mind.
