Prices 2011

Post by King Tobenkhamun »

I am aware of the 2008 price list which I believe to be relatively correct still today in part although for taxi fares etc especially from the airport in to town has there been any increase? What is a respectable fare these days?

Please post any current prices for anything you know to have increased in recent years here.

Local beer, cigarettes, taxis etc or anything else...?

Thanks,

Toby xxx

Well King, as you know, it is all to do with how well, or how much you know the joint. IF you know it as well as I suspect you do, then all taxi fares are around the same price when you last visited

When you arrive in Luxor King, you should do exactly what I hear Choc did, when he first arrived in Luxor.

Immeadiatly, before doing anything, go down to the river bank, and check out the ducks. Now wait for a few to go by,.........there, notice if you can an opening, looks like a mouth, but it aint. Now, if you can be as tight as that, I am certain that, like Choc, you too will have little difficulty paying out more for items, than what you did years ago.

Most food prices have gone up and cigarettes have shot up in price. I would shop at KZ (Metro) if you want proper prices. Since the revolution quite a lot of shops charge what they want to charge like in the case of a packet a marlboro should be 12le but lots of shops charge from 12.50le to 15le. I was shocked that 40 supermarket (normally quite good with prices)) was cashing in on cigarette prices set by the Goverment (at 12le)and charging 13le when i visited the supermarket a few weeks ago

Flour in Forty is 22 le for 5 kilos. I remember getting upset when it went up to 6 le. Sugar is now 6.5 le and oil prices have rocketed. Remember what the local wage is and see how hard it to feed a family.

What's the point in reaping the benefits of a bargain 'A' to only spend what you would at home lol. Get a grip, it's not about being tight with money it's about being practical and getting the most for your money.

I think, I shall just stick with the scrum at the airport, when they rush me, I give exactly what Glyph gives them,...........a look of utter disgust, and by the time either she or I get to town the poor driver looks as though he has been dragged through an edge backward,............they get no money, and are always glad to be off on their way.

As for 50LE Choc, are you for real. I thought you as a resi, had learnt a few tricks over the past couple of months.

Good prices, CE ... I think 50le is a perfectly reasonable fare between the airport and town. I wonder how many of us save money, or attempt to save money, by taking the A-Four route ... book a taxi, throw a strop and storm off so "the poor driver looks as though he has been dragged through an (h)edge backward,............they get no money, and are always glad to be off on their way".

It's an awful statement even if it isn't true. Not an expat image to be encouraged or condoned in the slightest. It's a shame that such sour fruits are kept among the ripe and abundant. Maybe it's age, loneliness, or low self worth. Whatever the reason it's not a true reflection of how respectful tourists and expats conduct themselves.

I pay 50 le to be collected from the airport and 60 le if the driver comes and collects me from the house, puts my bags in the taxi, helps me check that the cat is not locked in and double checks that all my doors are locked and padlocked and all my window shutters closed. I think it is a bargain.

Yes but Deedee if you had to go from your place to Norwich Airport it would cost a fortune in Taxi fares, it used to cost me 10 pounds stirling from Wroxham to Norwich Airport, approx. 90le and its is nothing like as far as Luxor Airport to Central Luxor...
There has been suggestions made that Luxor should have metered taxi's but that was to the old 1 month Governor, it seems as though up to press the new Governor, is not as keen to meet the ex pats as the 1 month one...

True CE - taxis from the UK would cost a fortune. Taxis from my Luxor home are not so costly. :)

Speak for yourself. Last time I arrived in Luxor by myself, the driver didn't even try to haggle so I didn't need to give him any kind of look at all. In Cairo, I book a car in advance or use one from one of the companies there that can provide a receipt and that offer the same prices as booking in advance. No need to haggle, when there is a fixed price to be paid, which may be more or less than the going price that those who bother with haggling pay.

In Cairo I pay 70 le for a booked car from Terminal 3 to the Downtown area - a decent one not a black and white taxi with no brakes.
