They are not all rip-off merchants in the supermarkets here. Even though Ive moved apartments I still go to my old shop because I get such excellent service there and the right prices. Its the small supermarket in between Nubi Stables and Karim Hotel. They sell great Edam and Gouda cheese there too.

I'm certain that Keefy could help you with the PM problem. But I just can't comprehend how you consistently manage to be ripped off over here - I've been to several WB restaurants (my favourite being Fayrouz) and have never paid more than the menu prices. Similarly with the supermarkets I visit - yes, the ones in Gezira/Ramla are more expensive than those out of the tourist area, so I don't bother with them. Never dealt with lawyers yet, so I can't honestly comment on their fees.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

I would say Luxor is a darn sight safer than Northern Ireland where they have been rioting yet again without making international headlines. Or my old home town where a 29 year old was stabbed to death in the town centre in broad daylight a couple of weeks ago. As yet the USA embassy have not issued a travel warning to Leicestershire!!
Thosew of you who have lived in luxor for a few years need to see what normal life in the uk is like now then you would be saying that luxor is very safe

Before we reach the 13th page on this subject, the best thing to say is LUXOR IS SAFE, LUXOR IS CALM, AND LUXOR IS OPEN FOR TOURISM...
If people believ in the hyped up Media then there is nothing anyone can do and say, be them living full time in Luxor or not.
Please listen to the media properly, and listen for statements such as, "If this happens" It may be" "It could be" ---- None of these statements give facts they are speculation and hype, unfortunatly this is how the Media works, and worse of all this is what people believe..
So I say being a full time liver in Luxor, come enjoy, get a lovely tan, and enjoy The welcome...

For once, I agree with Choc totally and utterly! I think the mistaken mindset goes - Riots in Cairo - Cairo is in Egypt - Egypt is unsafe - Luxor is unsafe - QED! How ridiculous - it's like advising people that Edinburgh is unsafe because there are demonstrations in Trafalgar Square.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

It does seem to be getting better though, I would not tell anyone not to come here now (maybe a few months ago I might have said different).

I'm not aware of any media saying Luxor is unsafe (source??) It was the FCO which advised against travel for a few weeks during the height of the revolution which invalidated travel insurance and stopped flights. Since then, no media have advised against travel to Luxor, that I'm aware of, nor has the FCO. You yourself Stan posted the link to the embassy website encouraging visitors to Luxor.LivinginLuxor wrote:For once, I agree with Choc totally and utterly! Hey hey Carlton Brown of the FO, no body has mentioned the FO, what I was saying is that the media reports are very speculative, and do not show the true picture of Luxor. Luxor is totally different to Cairo but people like Stan says see Cairo, see Egypt see Luxor, and listen to the maybe's the what if's and the could be's. They should be listening to the has, and the was.
Regarding the Foriegn Office, well thats the Foriegn Office for you!!! Another branch doing thier job, similar to the Banking Regulator, OFGEM and such, being there to protect the consumer, any replies about these bodies please put in the appropriate forum heading ---For a laugh----

Faruz is nice Stan and yes you are correct the prices on the menu's are exactly what you pay, don't have a problem with these establishments at all....Anywhere I go now I always ask for the menu and carry a piece of paper and pen with me to keep a check on what the bill will be at the end...
Incidently had my haircut on the east bank yesterday, 10le for the cut and 5le for the threading, well pleased, a bit different from the guy on Ramla front, for the same thing he charged me 70le, mind you that was a year ago and although he keeps goading me to have a cut, I don't think he understands sign language, ha ha!!!
Also went to KZ's took a calculator with me and guess what the the total price on my calculator was the same as the till, so no problems there. They looked a bit strange when I pulled 12 breadloaves out of the trolley, stocked up for 3 week period... Never had any complaints about KZ's at all.. My trusty calculator goes everywhere with me now!! along with my Arabic numbers chart ha ha

Sorry, Keefy, but I've been talking to several tourists over the past few days, and they all agree that the hassle from caleches is probably as bad as they have ever known or more, but safety is just not an issue. Tourists feel safe here, and maybe they don't haunt the same areas as you do.
There is no evidence, other than increased hassle, that Luxor is not as safe as before the revolution - in fact for tourists, whose money is appreciated, their safety is paramount.
