Hi

A couple of months ago someone posted pictures of the moon with details of how they were taken - I've done a search but can't find the topic. Any help appreciated.

I won't tell you what I was half expecting to see when I opened this thread....thank goodness I didn't so I don't need to moderate.

Same sentiment here Barry, at least the topic is sensible..

I dont know how often the maps are updated on the moon though..every couple of millenia should suffice...

There's loads on google images to trawl though as well.

Thanks Z but it was the 'how to' that I was looking for - the one on here was simple and easy to follow unlike some of the guides I've seen on the 'net.

I'm sure a member by the name of "Andy" had a picture of the moon somewhere in the Albums section, and I think he had recorded all the techie arty farty stuff behind it all, I'll see if I can find that as well..

You'll need a good zoom - at least 10x or 200mm. Preferably a 10-12 megapixel camera, so you can crop the moon at a decent size. It's best to use a tripod, or some other means to hold camera steady. Don't try to take the picture at night - might seem a silly thing, but the brightness of the moon against a black background usually gives a washed out image. It's best to take it while the sky is still blue, preferably around dusk - then there is not so much contrast. That's what I do, but there may be other and better ways.

A couple of months ago I went into the back garden, looked at the moon and thought wow.....I still cannot understand my camera so just took it on 'auto'

Nice Got that "Mars" feel to it as well...

That's pretty much my way of thinking on Photo' s JOJO.. wait till dark, "Automatic" setting or "god Mode" as I refer to it. point and click..

Thanks guys and love your picture JoJo. Remembered what my problem was / is and that is the focus - because it is too bright auto focus has no chance and manual isn't much better. Just tried putting a dark green filter on in the hope that the brightness would be reduced enough to enable focusing - still no good so back to the drawing board.

Maybe a ND8 filter would reduce the light enough Brian, I was going to try it for you, but the clouds have moved in again If the moon is bright tomorrow I will give it a try

Moon Photos

i remember taking them, as it was new years day this year ( how sad ) and i couldn't help but notice how clear the sky was while on my way home.

i played about a bit taking pictures all hand held using a 300mm lens, camera set on manual ( auto focus wouldn't always lock on) trying different app/shut settings and like Stan said the brightness of the moon against the dark sky
, so i used a grad filter...............

If my good lady gets fed up of looking at ebay and i get back on my pc i'll see if i can find what setting i used

Very nice picture Ken - this is my attempt taken last week. I did try 2 dark green filters plus a dark red filter - that was far too much and the exposure was far too short,I then changed to the 2 dark green filters and this is what I got. I think it would have been better with a little more exposure - the original of course came out green and dark green so converted to b&w (ok I know should have set the camera to take in B&W in the first place but forgot)



I used those particular filters as I didn't have any others.

Good pictures you guys it is extremely difficult to get a good moon picture and after your earlier post I had another session the other night, but it was a miserable failure (hence no pictures posted here )
I tried all sorts of combinations and filters, but no real joy even though in the past I have taken some reasonably good shots. I am convinced that it is 90% good luck as in how bright the moon appears, how cloudy the sky is, how clear and still the air happens to be on the night.

A couple of years ago, there was a shop on what is called The Triangle, in Bournemouth, called Celestial........ something. They had some trully fantastic photos, but blown up to poster size, and beautifully framed, pictures not only of the moon but also of the planets, went back a few months later, but the shop had gone. Some local told me they had a web site, well you lot on here, know that my skills on the net is, shall we say .....nil.

Any help please ?
