I love chutney and have just finished making enough green bean chutney to last a year!!!
as we are moving back to Luxor next year is there any where you can buy the stuff or does any one know how you can make it??
may seem a daft question but I do love my pickles and I hate the white vinegar that you get in Luxor now!!

No such luck on buying any. The closest I have come is mixing together cheap balsamic and white vinegar. It's been that long since I've had malt vinegar that I'm not sure what I'm comparing my concoction to!

I have seen malt vinegar at the two brothers shop on the West Bank, in the little room at the back behind the counter. I think it was even Sarsons too!

I'd be surprised to find malt vinegar in a Muslim run shop due to the alcohol connection. That's why "non-brewed condiment" became so popular in England during the days of the rampant total abstainers.

What's wrong with malt? What do you think Fayrouz is made from?
Another nice vinegar available here is sugarcane vinegar.

What about booza, sold at just about every road junction up and down Egypt in the summer? It is made with old bread, contains yeast and is mildly alcoholic and the Egyptians love it. (It is quite refreshing on a hot day and SO screams ancient Egyptian beer which was of about the same consistency.)
