Good cake?

I know this seems really trivial but VERY IMPORTANT TO ME! :) sorry for the caps, I get emotional about this topic. Do they have any good cakes in Luxor? I can bake.....but, it really does not taste the same as a professionally baked cake.
How about cake mixes? and ready made icing?

Egyptian cakes tend to be on the dry and tasteless side and generally you can make something better from scratch at home. However, there is one bakery in Luxor called Twinky that is pretty good, which I am sure everyone else here will also recommend. They have cakes that taste, you guessed it, like Twinkies. I've posted a recipe in this forum for a cake that I make that is very moist and can even be left sitting out in the heat and it doesn't dry out. It probably could be frosted if you prefer frosted cake.

You can by fresh & dried yeast no problem plus different grades of flour...you can even 'stone-grind your own, 'for that personnel touch!.......

I would recommend passing on the stone ground wheat after what happened in al-Ba'irat last summer!

Nothing like a home made xmas cake - loads of dried fruit soaked in brandy...and an extra slurp or two of brandy to keep it moist

yessssssssss Homemade Christmas cake!! Love it! AND I have the most fab recipe for a 'light' cake too! Always turns out super moist and delicious!

As an amateur breadmaker I can tell you that Egyptian dry yeast is USELESS!!! My only success is when friends bring yeast down from UK.
Sharon would tell you we came to Luxor for Egyptology; the TRUTH is we came for TWINKY'S!!!!!!!!!

I guess I assumed by "cake" she meant an American layered and frosted sweet cake, not a yeast bread. GD can you add pudding mix to a cake mix there to make it moister?

Good to know about twinkies! thanks for the info.
I am interested in bread making also.....I bake bread here in the USA. Not sure the difference in local yeast....I think I will bring my own. :D
