I was about to say Yes & No and then remembered I bought my last lot from Blighty, good question upon reflection, I can only remember seeing it in Metro Cairo...

Ditto - closest I could come is METRO Hurghada.

I grow my own - have a plant in large pot that I grew myself from a stem and keep it in the ensuite - seems to like all the steam and very healthy plant . Took about 10 months before I got my first lot - worth a try

I never saw it in Luxor, in Cairo they have it though (Metro, Carrefour, Spinneys...). Have even bought it but can't remember exactly what it cost, around 30 LE kilo?

Arkwrights had it last week, cant remember how much it was.

It seems just about every women I know in Luxor is expecting at the moment and suffering morning sickness so wanted to suggest making a ginger brew to drink, but there's not a lot of point if they can't get the fresh ginger easily.[/face]

I've had ginger tea quite often in the coffee shops down in Luxor (although they are a bit heavy on the ginger!)

Sure ginger costs a bit more than 30 LE a kilo - thought it was about 50, but I don't often look at the number else I scare myself too much. A 'knobble' normally costs me about a fiver. I'm off to Carrefour in a mo and will have a peep if I remember and don't get distracted by yellow courgettes or the like!

Surely hepzi you could grow it in luxor - any steamy bathroom would do but you dry it out in winter to harvest the roots/stems - worth a try all you need to do is let a peice of fresh ginger sprout then pot it up easy peasy
There are many other remedies for morning sickness - as well as wrist bands and homeopathy -pickled raw grapes in vinegar with salt and pepper taken on an empty stomach in the morning are a very useful remedy for morning sickness, nausea and vomiting.
Try taking 200 ml of fresh orange juice with 3-4 grams of pepper and a pinch of salt added in it first thing in the morning.
Also pomegranete juice and honey - all available readily in luxor, also try sucking ginger sweets - our local health shop has them "gingins" with real peices of ginger in them

You can get ginger root from any of the spice shops in Luxor You can also get natural ginger capsules from most pharmacies

I'm really trying to find something realitively cheap, natural and simple that I can suggest to some of these women. I did find some ginger sweet type things in a pharmacy in Luxor once before for one of my girl friends there but they were not that cheap. The women concerned all Egyptian and living on very low incomes.[/face]

Just take them loads of Gaviscon Hepzi I lived on the bloomin stuff when I was pregnant with Mimi not so much with Karime until the latter end when I was in UK and could get it

Forgot to peep at ginger in Carrefour yesterday, far too intent on picking a bunch of pretty garlic bulbs!
But just been in Metro and it was 38 LE a Kilo. But like I said a small knobble isn't too badly priced.

Gasviscon is one of the things I stock up on in the UK. Think I have a small mountain of them lurking in the bedside drawer!

I remember your post and I know people use ginger for this purpose in Egypt (maybe elsewhere too)

Now I read this warning:
Evira, Finnish Food Safety Authority: Warning label to be added on food supplements containing ginger as well as on ginger tea, and corresponding drink powders

Although it mentions ginger products, not fresh ginger itself - but have ginger been studied that well (article says not).

Not good to take if you have a high BP

I found a glass of milk much tastier and just as effective for the pregnancy heartburn and used to drink gallons of ginger beer for the sickness I had when expecting my 2nd.

Every year I try to grow ginger in Luxor. Try is the word, no success yet with ginger bought in Egypt, it rots very quickly. I think it is stored at a low temperature - or even frozen and warmed up again before sale.
Ginger bought in the UK keeps better and has always sprouted in a plastic bag - strange.
