I'd just add for the benefit of Dusak & others that FGM performed in Egypt is generally of the types I & II...where the HIV related risks are somewhat less than for Type III

Very informative and this info re: FGM I didn't know or even realize i.e. there was a I,II,III or IV and given the article it makes sense that disease(s) would be easier to contract.
If a strip of birth control tablets is that cheap then I think that would be the preferred method of contraception. I was thinking more the use of condoms as related to AIDS prevention and was associating them (probably not well) with male to male sex which given the Egyptian mindset towards homosexuality would be a taboo and the ancillary issue of the wife contracting the disease as a secondary matter.

I doubt the issue of HIV enters the mind of many Egyptian men....even those indulging in casual sex with foreigners. Male or female.

I know of quite a few Egyptian women who have been sterilized at the same time as having their second or third C section to make sure they cant get pregnant again. Seems very much to be the responsibility of the women rather than the men to prevent more children.

Very interesting read and informative. I just thought it was a quick snip and cut and that was the end of the matter. Just go's to show how important it is to finally rid the world of this barbaric practice. It is little wonder now to understand why the pharmacy's are so full of women with a list as long as this of possible side affects to have to live with. Not nice.

No such thing as a "quick snip and cut" when it is done by non-surgically trained persons using old, non-sterilized & non-surgical equipment to perform this invasive procedure not even using anesthetic or numbing.
