Or could he have said...'Of course I'm [a] Stork - I'm not Butter!'

It did want to slip away quietly but there were too many palms to grease first! ;)

Birds, animals and even insects have been accused of spying in various countries. I think the pigeon depicted in this article would have had difficulty in flying though!

LOL! Why? Do you think the Egyptians may be about to turn to cannibalism?

It came up on Twitter with a public facebook link

2 hours ago near Cairo, Al Qahirah, Egypt ยท
Sad news: Menes the White Stork has been killed.

After being safely released into the Salugah & Ghazal protected area several days ago, Menes flew off to a nearby Nile Island, where he was captured and killed, to be eaten by local villagers.

Storks have been part of the Nubian diet for thousands of years, so the actual act of eating storks is not in itself a unique practice. However, the short-lived success story of getting Menes released, was not enough to keep him safe till he exited Egypt.

Egypt has long suffered from issues of uncontrolled hunting. However, it is important to always balance the needs of local communities with the needs of nature and biodiversity conversation.

We truly are saddened by the tragic end to Menes' journey, but once again, we would like to thank the park rangers of Aswan for their excellent initial efforts to get Menes the White Stork released safely into a protected area.

The entire region has a very long way to go, specially in the field of raising awareness on hunting and migratory birds.

NCE will keep you updated on such efforts and projects.

No Hepzibah.I'm referring to fact that it didn't make it out of Egypt alive.
And given the latest news on bomb alert at Cairo airport,it's maybe not as humourous a statement as you seem to think it is.
Been nicely emboldened though!
Glad it gave you a LOL moment.

I see the context in the way you write about the Stork and the fact that there has been a bomb alert at Cairo airport as being very different.

Very recently, there was a report in the UK of one of the 'Royal' Swans being butchered and barbequed in a London park. I was surprised there was so little comment made about it at the time (not on L4U as I don't think it was posted here, but in general) and am now wondering why this stork has had so much international publicity and raised such feelings of disgust in many. What is the difference?

Edit: To add link to the Swan story.

Since the Swan is somehow regarded as the Queens "property", I think the Swan was devoured and left as a symbolic message rather than out of hunger...
Those things can be bad tempered, especially if you are Ginger..

The story of the Egyptian stalk will become an epic tale in the schools. The fight for survival of the single species in the face of overwhelming odds and adversity. Then some b*****d comes along and kills it. Politics, who needs them.

Another depressing story emerging from Egypt at the moment about the stork, was sorry but not altogether surprised to hear about its sad demise.

Regarding the swan, it would appear that many Eastern Europeans see swans and other water fowl as fair game to hunt kill and eat. Not nice, and another reason to tighten up on immigration to the UK. :td

Only a vegetarian or vegan would consider waterfowl as not nice. Not only Eastern European, but anywhere in the world.

And then to bring out the spurious conclusion that immigration should be stopped!
