Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Charles Rowan KCB. (circa 1782 – 8 May 1852)
Our block is named after him.
A right character and one of two first Commissioners of The Metropolitan Police Force. (The Met)
Alongside Sir Richard Mayne KCB, both Irishmen and good mates.
Our gaff was built for 92 police men and families, (right opposite the public baths)
The Scotsman and architect Gilbert McKenzie Trench. (1885–1979)
His only ref: is duh! The Police Box (Tardis) ...on Wikipedia but he also built four of these accommodation 'forts
North of the River and one South over in Tooting (My Gran lived in Tooting)
And he used many as new untried construction materials.
I mean Horses in the basements ? Horses = horse sh*t = manure = mushrooms, QED!
Anyhow I'm still trying to get information regarding our underground stables including a couple
of cells, with flush toilets...The Met is not that helpful..qed.
I mean what with the 'wrabblerousers of the day ? all around this inscrutable manor, 'a right load of upstarts....
commies, fenians, bolshis, drunks the lot..." we wuz poor but we wuz appy"
Think! 'mushroom farm, chanterelles, porcinis, oysters, fly agarics....to name but a few...
Ps: 'A man's got to earn a living 'neh? ......
Pss: It's just come to me! "We just got rid of the last useless Met Commissioner and have a new one.
They should have two Met Commissioners 'to watch each other..just saying..
