Re: State of emergency lifted.
"Keeping the hoi polloi at bay is going to be quite a struggle"
I was told, the other day, that residents along the way have been instructed to move out and go back to their families for the duration. Although a later informant told me that this wasn't true, and that they had only been told to keep all their doors and windows firmly closed.
As I look out from my livingroom sofa, I see that they are trying out the lasers every night, and all through the night it seems, as they were still on when I turned over in bed at about 3.30 this morning. They'll wear them out before the big day at this rate!

Quit correct, but these fireworks are going to light up the sky, not dozens of AH's.Who2 wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 11:45 pm Didn't Guy Fawkes come a cropper trying out tunnels ?.........![]()

Shades of Coventry and the requirement for the locals to avert their eyes while Lady Godiva rode starkers through the town.Teddyboy wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 7:56 pm

Re: State of emergency lifted.
Afraid not newcastle. We forsook the opportunity to buy on Sharia Karnak (near Luxor Temple) for our current location, between the tourist souk and the railway.
The view from the building on Sharia Karnak has changed dramatically since 2006, so much so that I now sometimes wonder if we did the right thing. Mind you, we do love where we are!

I’m still trying to get my mind around that photo Teddyboy.
The West Bank hills seem so close!! They say the camera doesn’t lie....but surely that’s an optical ilusion?

Re: State of emergency lifted.
I did have a bit of zoom on.
Funnily enough, I was just commenting to my beloved this afternoon that when I walked backwards from the open door into the living room, the mountains seemed to get bigger! On a photograph taken ordinarily, the mountains look a long way away, but in real life they look more or less as they do in the picture. It is rather queer, as they must be two or three miles away, at least.
I'm a proper dummy when it comes to technological things that cannot be fixed with a hammer!

Re: State of emergency lifted.
Even though the State of emergency is lifted, they are saying it was just done to make Egypt look good in the West, the Parliament has given Sisi more powers which is greater than the emergency laws that was in place, but now the emergency provisions are made permanent
Read more in this article: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 50698.htmlDays after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced the end of Egypt’s nationwide state of emergency on October 25, 2021, the government sent a slew of legal amendments to the parliament, incorporating many emergency-law-like provisions in other laws. The parliament swiftly passed the amendments on November 1. President al-Sisi still needs to formally sign them into law.

Anyone who thinks the lifting of the state of emergency will make any difference to the lives of ordinary Egyptians is living in cloud cuckoo land![]()

But never mind, someone will be making a king's ransom out of the whole shebang, and I'd bet that they're from somewhere a long way East of here!

I have a horrible feeling that the opening ceremony of the Avenue of Sphinxes might descend into farce.

In actual fact, this is Darth Maul. A real nasty with the double ended light saber.

Re: State of emergency lifted.
Had another look today at the Avenue, they have no covered the track way with gravel, put up more sound and light boxes, but what is dashing the much awaited proceedings...Not...Is they are putting in a paved walkway that looks around 6 meters wide from Luxor temple to infinity. God only knows how long this will take to complete. This is on the main road side, not the church side.

I have a feeling the Emilio roof will either be block-booked and reserved for VIPs...or, more likely, declared out of bounds for all.Who2 wrote: Thu Nov 11, 2021 6:33 pm Having thought upon it, I reckon the roof of the Emilio sounds best....that's viewing
