A week ago on here, I wondered where all the worlds cruise liners were ?
Today pricked my interest again what with all this self isolation..

The only figures I could obtain were these amazing 2018 results...

537,000 passengers and 314 ships and that was 2 years ago,
it's all those adverts of bloody great boats blighting beautiful areas.

An estimated 27.2 million will cruise globally in 2018.

Here's another little gem: Weighing 226,963 gross registered tons with a passenger capacity of 5,479 guests at double occupancy (it fits 6,780 guests total) and 2,100 crew members, Harmony is now the world's largest cruise ship.20 May 2016

So any ideas where they are all now ? 'because only a few have been reported so far.
Just something to ponder before I don my hazchem outfit and wend my way to The Eagle to peruse
it's patrons and the papers......
Ps: Bet the viewing figures rise and rise on L4U, what with all this self isolation.
Until the internet goes down as will phone providers, maintenance men get sick as well..

Who2 there are a number of programmes that have been, or are being, screened on the UK tv channels, looking at various aspects of cruise boats and cruising. I think there is one on in the next few days - possibly part of a series - about a cruise boat that is being built and furnished to obscene $ levels.

Cruises have never really attracted me, although I could be drawn to another river cruise somewhere. I'm just put off by these huge floating cities - including alas those that do sail rivers. If I were to be tempted, the recent examples of people being quarantined on boats has convinced me (as if I really needed convincing) that I would only sail if I could afford to have a cabin with a balcony. The thought of being isolated in an internal cabin and not even being to see the outside world makes me shudder.

Bit of an update from Luxor:

We had another meeting with representatives from WHO and learnt a lot more about this VCV19 – all very interesting and good to know that Egypt is keeping on top of things – something that Europe has failed to do

It sounds from friends that were supposed to travel out here over Easter that it will be nearer the end of May or early June that travel will be possible again – interesting to hear that they all got full refunds for their cancelled flights - mind you if they had managed to get to Hurghada they wouldn’t have been able to get to Luxor as travel is almost impossible between cities now unless you have a good driver who knows how to avoid the check points – and yes, we know a few expats who flew back into Hurghada and did just that. So we haven’t let them near us until we know they’re clear – selfish ******** and stupid drivers !!!!!!!

Presumably, Who2, your friend had hols booked with TUI or some such outfit.

As far as I know EasyJet have not cancelled their reg flights to Hurghada.....yet. You can reschedule with them but, at the moment, if you cancel you lose your money.

This might change, of course, if Egypt goes into lockdown....or if the FCO step in and put Egypt on a no- go list.

I've not read or heard anything lately, other than a few cruise liners are having extended stays in Southampton whilst a number of others are long-term anchored just off the coast at Weymouth.

I think it is mainly crews that are still on board these boats: either they are essential crew such as maintenance, who will also need catering for, or they are effectively displaced persons because they cannot get back to their own homes for reasons of border closures, infection control, no flights or other transport available.

The thought of being stuck on a boat for an indeffinate period would be my lockdown nightmare.

What about the cruise boats on the Nile? Who's looking after them or are they just tied up and left to rot. I have a trip booked on August 8th but I doubt very much if it will go ahead.

I drove down from the bridge the other week Crewmeal and looked at all the boats along the river. No sign of life anywhere
it was during Ramadan though. Going again tomorrow I will have another look.

Had a good look yesterday at the boats when I passed, All tied up and no sign pf life on any of them.
