Not very impressed at all. You'd think theyd have enough inspiration for things of great beauty in this place - or is it supposed to be trendy?

You only have to ask yourself....which famous figures, in the fields of art, sculpture etc. have ever emanated from Egypt?

It’s not their scene really.

They do have some pretty mean squash players though.

I have been trying to understand the controversy over the positioning over the ankh, started by a politician, but Google Translate isn't co-operating.

I think it was placed near Luxor temple and Al Hagag mosque? It is now near the Sheraton.

I'm guessing the objection was having a 'pagan' symbol near the mosque? Then wouldn't you have to move the whole temple? :D

I doubt that having a “pagan” symbol near the Mosque was a problem.

Islam originated in pagan Arabia and is still steeped in pagan traditions.

Some historians even argue that Allah was originally a pre-Islamic moon god....hence the crescent moon associated with the religion.

An interesting hyphopesis however, I believe if anything it may be an objection by the 2nd Church in Christendom, being the Coptic Church. Many people of the Western Christian Church do not realise the Cross of Christ or Crucifix, was first established in Egypt in the late first century, and taken from the ancient Egyptian Ankh. In the Western later Greek and Roman Church upto 313 A.D., the actual symbol or logos was a simple form of a fish.

I am guessing the objection was probably more to do with a 'forgotten old pagan' symbol of modern day Christianity.

I’ve heard that the well- known TV presenter Ahmed Mousa thought it didn’t “fit”. In other words his personal aesthetic outlook ruled the day.

Remarkable...and worrying.....if true.
