At least 19 people were killed and 30 others injured in an explosion outside Egypt's National Cancer Institute in central Cairo, Egypt's health ministry said early on Monday.
The interior ministry said one car was speeding and collided with the others, causing the explosion late on Sunday.
But why the crash caused such a large explosion was not immediately clear. It also was not clear if the casualties were all from the vehicles.
Videos posted online showed fire tenders trying to control a massive fire that damaged several cars.
The cancer treatment facility was evacuated after the crash, which happened near the famed Tahrir Square.
Bank security worker Abdel-Rahman Mohamed said, "We heard an explosion and ... the bank entrance glass was shattered everywhere."
The bank is at the opposite side of the hospital.
The health ministry said the injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Egypt's public prosecutor is investigating the cause of the incident, sources told Reuters news agency. There was no official statement indicating that the explosion was an attack.
Sources told Al Jazeera that a team of prosecutors, criminal laboratory and bomb experts has arrived at the scene of the explosion.
Road accidents are common in Egypt. The country's official statistics agency says 8,000 crashes last year caused more than 3,000 deaths and 12,000 injuries.

A car accident with multiple deaths is hardly news in Egypt nowadays.
The massive explosion and peripheral damage seems suspicious...and an enquiry is underway. Expect the Egyptian press to be somewhat muted, in line with instructions they have been given, until the “official” line is trotted out.

Re: 19 killed, 30 injured after deadly car crash
Well...what a surprise.
The authorities have determined that the crash and explosion was a terrorist incident caused by an affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood.
“The Ministry has also stated that Hams, a terrorist group, was behind the attack.
Hams, an Islamist militant group named Harakat Sawa’d Masr (the Arms of Egypt movement) commonly know as Hasm, has been active in the country since 2016. It has taken responsibility, over the years, for attacks specifically attacking security forces.
The Egyptian government qualifies Hasm as affiliated to the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood; however, the MB has staunchly rejected any association to terrorist or violent group activity.”

As usual they’ve identified and eliminated the terrorists.
Well done! Impressively fast forensic work!!
“Seventeen members of a terrorist cell were killed across two hideouts in Egypt in raids carried out by security forces on Thursday in response to the bombing of the National Cancer Institute in Cairo.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, eight terrorists were killed during a raid of a hideout in Fayoum, while seven other terrorists were killed during a second raid in East Shorouk, located east of Cairo. Two other terrorist were killed during an attempt to arrest them elsewhere in Cairo.
Police forces found explosives, weapons and ammunition at both hideouts.”

Well actually I thought they had been slow this time, doesn't usually take a few days to trace and kill the terrorists.

Why should any Government inform the masses, that's you and me just what they are up to.
Who ever gave the public the right to know ? just because we have 'social media ?
When does MI5 or 6 tell 'joe public what's going on, spare me..
That's why it's letters are SIS it means Secret and it ain't a secret if you tell someone is it...
Ps: 'loose lips sink ships' and social media is lippy very lippy...

Re: 19 killed, 30 injured after deadly car crash
It’s when the government MISinforms the masses that I object
And it worries me that the Egyptian masses swallow this crap.
Hey ho.....
But it’s too much to expect an announcement along the lines...
“ We reckon some anti government mob were up to no good. We don’t know who they were, or what they planned. Seems they screwed up. But, it’s an ideal opportunity to round up one or two likely lads we’ve had our eye on and “eliminate” them....thus saving the state a lot of bother now, and in the future.”
