Neck Ties

Nothing to do with Egypt, and a cross between a question and a rant.

Why, oh why, do men dress up in what would appear to be smart apparel - crisp white shirt; tailored suit, with or without a waistcoat - presumably for a fairly formal occasion, and then not wear their tie properly? Is it really smart to have the tie tied correctly but then leave it hanging under the top button and collar edge?

I may be old fashioned but I find this sloppy and ruins the whole look.

Well it's quite simple really, half Windsor tie, means relaxed situation after the main event, wedding, christening,etc.

Full Windsor, must conform to the total event, funeral, memorial, etc.

This has nothing to do with the knot used, be it Windsor, Half Windsor, or any other kind of knot. It has everything to do with the positioning of the knot which, I have always understood, should cover the top/collar button (or stud as worn by my grandfather).

When I go out, unless its casual or down to the beach I always wear a neck tie, with either a clip or a stud to hold it in place. Silk ties can be a menace at times because they slip around the collar of the shirt and the knot slides under the collar. A Windsor knot or half Windsor does help but it depends on the collar of the shirt, to whether or not it looks right. Here I can get back into my suits again, the Summer sun even allows it, so I can go back to ties and cravats. Even when wearing a cravat I use a stud to hold it in place. Probably me being old school, but Lynne always looks nice so I do my best to do the same.

As you say......nothing to do with Windsor/Half-Windsor which are distinct knots.

With some materials. and some wearers, the knot has a regrettable habit of slipping and not adjusting it is just "sloppiness". That's what tie pins and studs are for.

There's nothing attractive about a tie hanging at "half -mast".....it's strictly for snotty school kids with a rebellious streak.

The same goes for trousers hanging below the waist to show off your underwear.

If you can't manage to keep your tie knot correctly positioned, better to dispense with the tie altogether and join the growing ranks of politicians and celebrities who wear a suit with open collar in public.

Mind you .....they'd have been shot on the spot in my day

The tie thing does not rule my life, but it does irritate me when people who talk the talk don't walk the walk. In this case those who talk about their own sartorial elegance and then make big noticable mistakes.

That brought back memories Newcastle, I had to wear a tie for school but only with the winter uniform. I didn't realize there were so many ways to tie a tie or wear one nearly as many ways as there were to wear your beret. Hated the darned things.

To be fair, although it certainly goes against the grain for formal occasions, an opened collared shirt with a suit can still look quite smart provided they are chosen well and it is by design not accident of fault. Alas, all too often the man looks unkempt.

You're right. Nothing unusual there nowadays.

It still looks a bit odd to me....but then I worked in the City in the '80's and '90's . The partner in charge of my department at KPMG still came to work in a bowler hat. He was a bit of an oddball. I remember him criticising my pinstripe suit because the stripes were, in his sartorial opinion, too wide!

That's brought back memories of the older girls at my grammar school.

Neatly attired in uniform and tie by day ....but, on the bus home, they quickly loosened their tie and stuffed the bulk down their cleavage.

Ties had to be worn until they reached home, so they were obeying the rules in letter, if not in spirit.
