I’m a bit jaundiced about Egyptian buys/take homes, so many are made in china/synthetic products, too bulky/breakable/difficult to pack or not well designed.

From memory there are a few craft shops around Luxor. Others might be a help with more details. Garagos: http://1001-nights.posthaven.com/ an ‘unusual’ blog.

The research I did on the Zabbaleen/garbage collectors of Cairo post gave be a few contacts but I can’t personally vouch. I’ve yet to finish that post on the Zabbaleen – so should pull a finger out.

You can buy the Zabbaleen products on line or from international retailers and Egyptian shops listed in their website: http://www.ape.org.eg/WhereToBuy.html. There seem to be a few problems with their website. Handloom rugs & bags, patchwork quilts and handmade paper products such as greetings cards.

The Aga Khan Trust has a very full list of all types active in craft and design work in Cairo and Alex – although I think some of them might be modernistic and high end: http://www.formingideas.co.uk/content/i ... ctor-egypt

Thanks Hafiz! It's difficult to avoid the foreign-made crap anywhere in the world, Oz included.

A fair-trade handicrafts shop in Luxor that supports local artisans, especially female ones, is Habiba, co-incidentally owned by an Aussie lady and her Egy husband. It is in Andrawes Pasha St, a side street of the souk opposite the entrance to Luxor Temple. Nearly all my souvenirs and gifts came from there recently.

It's a lovely shop, with things you can't find anywhere else in Luxor. I'm not sure if it is still open but the same lady has a shop in Karnak, not far from the Hilton.

I love Habibi, and never manage a visit to Luxor without buying something there! As I type I can see a beautiful little bowl from Fayoum, that I bought in 2013 - I love it!

 Carrie! A girl does not need more excuses to dress up and party than a new bag. Why do you think I have so many? :a37:
