Mobile Phones
Hi,
My son's phone is on its way out.
What are the prices of smartphones like in Luxor?
Can a cheap basic one be bought cheaply in Luxor?
Any info appreciated.

Re: Mobile Phones
There are loads of shops around Luxor selling these phones. We will take you to some on Tuesday as she that knows all, knows where they all are.

Re: Mobile Phones
Dont but a phone in Egypt, they are more expensive, there was also a report in a newspaper about a week ago, I will try and find it for you
Chinese ones are really bad too, all Egyptians I know constantly complain about them, though in the UK some Chinese makes seem OK, probably down to the ones in the UK are Class A while the ones in Egypt are Class B or C.

Re: Mobile Phones
A lot of Egyptians would prefer an old European phone to a new cheap Chinese one from Luxor - so I would get Zooropa jnr a cheap phone in the UK to see him through the holiday then let him (or you) save up for a good smartphone when he is back in the UK

Too late...I assume Zooropa's talking about the son who's with him NOW in Egypt.Bearded Brian wrote:A lot of Egyptians would prefer an old European phone to a new cheap Chinese one from Luxor - so I would get Zooropa jnr a cheap phone in the UK to see him through the holiday then let him (or you) save up for a good smartphone when he is back in the UK
I agree with the comments about smart phones here...expensive and of dubious quality.
If it does pack up, it would be an interesting social experiment to see if a young man can survive a week sans smart phone without topping himself

Re: Mobile Phones
Well, ive had a right nighmare with vodafone/sims today.
I bought 3 sims, 1 sim for a usb dongle for my laptop - thats fine.
1 sim for my sons phone data only (didnt know you could get data only) but that seems fine.
1 sim for my phone to have voice/data/txt.
Ive got data but i cant bloody call anyone.
Ive tried calling my uk mobile - call failed.
Ive tried calling my sons egyptian sim - call failed.
Ive tried calling home - call failed.
When i try calling my sons number it just says call failed - doesnt even attempt to dial.
When i try calling home i get a brief voice message in arabic which of course is greek to me.
Am i doing something incredibly stupid?

Re: Mobile Phones
Sounds like they might have misunderstood you and gave you 2 data sims, I dont know if things have changed with vodafone but in the past you could not ring a data sim even though it had a number.

Re: Mobile Phones
They def understood me because they said you will have to wait for one hour to get data but you can make calls now - I didn't try, was only interested in the data at the time so I could use uber to get back to my hotel in Giza, the data didn't activate in an hour so went back to the shop and they said system was down but not to worry as soon as it was back up the data would activate - didn't know of course when it would come back up - which was no good to me as I couldn't use uber to get home so had to just grab a cab. Wished I had tested the phone now.
I'm on flexi 25 if that makes any sense. Website doesn't say anything about it not being voice.

Re: Mobile Phones
Have you tried the obvious of turning the phone off then back on? another method they would tell you in Egypt is to go to the Network settings and manually choose a operator (try mobinil) after a while you will get a message to say not allowed or something like that, then choose Vodafone. once again turn off your mobile and then back on
Vodafone Luxor should help you regardless where you bought the sim.
Flex 25 - 28.75 L.E
Is 800 units, this will take 1 unit for every 1 minute to a vodafone number or 1 sms or 1 megabyte of data, and 5 units if you call or txt other operators.
A few years back you had to wait 24hrs for the flexi plans to activate

It says coming soon, Samsung Galaxy J6 which is expected to launch in Q3 2017 so Samsung have not release it yet, if they ever do, it seems strange why they would backtrack from a J7
It seems like Samsung dont like the number 6 since they always jump from version 5 to version 7 of all their brands of phones except in the case of the S series (Galaxy S6)

Thanks Keefy, I'm sure we will as long as I get the temple/doing bugger all balance right. If my son starts holding my pencil like you would a dagger, starts looking at it and then me I will know that I have to scale back the temples a little more.DJKeefy wrote:No problem ZooropaI hope you and your son enjoy your stay in Egypt

Re: Mobile Phones
As per your invite via PM. I tried your new number and me being me when it was answered by an English bloke I cracked a funny. He replied in a posh voice ''no it isn't, by by and cut me off.
So yes it does work, but seems to be registered to someone else.
