Easter Egg fiasco
Easter egg row: Church of England accuses National Trust of 'airbrushing' religion out of children's egg hunt
The annual event, which sees hundreds of thousands of children search for chocolate eggs at National Trust properties, has been rebranded to exclude Easter for the first time in 10 years.
In previous years it has been called an "Easter Egg Trail", however this year it has been renamed the "Great British Egg Hunt"
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04 ... rbrushing/
Will the move be followed by PC adjustments to other "Easter" occasions? Will we be celebrating "Great British Sunday...and Monday"? Will the "Great British Bunny" be seen hopping about our shops in a few weeks' time?
And what of the "Easter Island"? How about "Great-big-ugly-stone-head Island"?
The world's gone mad....as if we didn't know that already
Heaven (I use the term advisedly, when it's still acceptable parlance) knows what they'll do with Christmas if we don't stop this nonsense....and I speak as an atheist!
Christmas trees (fir trees?), Christmas cake (seasonal cake?)....all gone in the name of not offending religious sensibilities.

Re: Easter Egg fiasco
What does eggs and the Easter Bunny have to do with JC anyway ?
Easter is named after Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of fertility, love, war, sex, and power, which in itself presents a dichotomy, because what has sex, war and power got to do with love....
So, Rabbits and eggs symbolically are closer to Ishtar than JC.

"The Theory of Everything" is a reasonably good film based on Stephen Hawking's search for a unified explanation of the cosmos, all that exists in it, the forces that bind it and, with a fair wind, how it all came into being.John Landon wrote:If I am wrong, then I want the lecture.....newcastle wrote:

"The Alternative Theory of Everything" is a book you should write! It would be of great interest to 'conspiracy theorists' and there's enough of them to make it a lucrative venture (if your smoking habit spares you long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labour).
But I digress. I've long felt that you exist in an alternative universe and, consequently, sincerely believe in 'alternative facts'. I would no more debate with you on your theories than I would debate with the Archbishop of Canterbury on the existence of God. Either would be utterly pointless.
"Your judgment I condemn not, neither do I mistake your reasons, but pray you to accept my thankfulness, excuse my doubtfulness, and take in good part my answer - answerless." - Queen Elizabeth I
Spoiler
The Ishtar/Easter meme originated with my hero Richard Dawkins - naughty man that he is! http://www.patheos.com/blogs/teachingno ... our-story/

Re: Easter Egg fiasco
Not being a member of the imaginary friend club my knowledge on this is very limited.
I thought the egg was symbolic of rebirth or birth?
And coating it in chocolate and slapping it in an over sized piece of brightly coloured cardboard is symbolic of somebody making a buck (or 5) out of it.

Re: Easter Egg fiasco
Easter as an annual celebration out of which manufacturers of chocolate eggs make a great deal of money is one of the few "indisputable facts" about it.
The rest, including the origins of the name itself. is largely a mishmash of myths.
Ishtar is pronounced Easter? Only if you have a speech impediment
Shurely shum mishtake

Re: Easter Egg fiasco
Oh well, Ask a reasonable question, get condescending verbal back...
Meme's ? spare me please. !!!! It was to my mind a reasonable theory even if "Pompus up my own ar5e Dawkins" came up with it.
The Old testament is nicked from the Epic of Gilgamesh and it seems Armarna. Christianity is juts pagan knowledge re written and a few re appearances of Old testament people.
So without answering my question, what I can find as a more reasonable explanation that once again the Christians nicked more ancient knowledge and the word Easter comes from a germanic word. Eostre, the Goddess of Springtide.
Either way, JC has nothing to do with bunnies and eggs.
And no one said "Ishtar is pronounced Easter" as it seems you implied...

You did more or less goad me into a response. Serves you right!

Steady on! RD is an incredible speaker and writer. If people call him pompous....perhaps it's because they are overwhelmed by his intellect. Having said that, his Ishtar meme was a cheap shot at christianity. Nobody's perfect.

Errr...no....and no....but we don't want another pointless discussion. Well...I don't.

Nope....another myth....or at least no verifiable evidence
Either way, JC has nothing to do with bunnies and eggs.
I'll give you that....but who said he did? The festival of Easter , however, is connected with bunnies and eggs. I'll leave you to research it.
And no one said "Ishtar is pronounced Easter" as it seems you implied...
I thought it was covered in the link....or maybe it was in another link rubbishing the Ishtar meme. There's so many.
Ahh...it was covered in the link : The meme shows the ancient Assyrian and Babylonian goddess Ishtar and makes a few claims against Christianity. The first is that “Ishtar” was pronounced “Easter.”

“Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus.”
