23.7 percent of Egyptians above 15 are illiterate

Post by DJKeefy »

More than 14 million Egyptians above the age of 10 cannot ‎read or write, said Egypt’s official statistics agency in a statement ‎Wednesday. ‎
Marking International Literacy Day, the Central Agency for Public ‎Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that of the 14.5 million ‎illiterate Egyptians, 9.3 million are ‎females and 5.2 million are males. ‎

The statement, which comes one day before the world celebrates the ‎‎50th anniversary of the start of International Literacy Day, ‎added that 23.7 percent of Egyptians above the age of 15 years are ‎illiterate; 30.9 percent female and 16.6 male. ‎

The gap between literate males and females in Egypt comes in line ‎with the international rates announced by UNESCO. According to ‎data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 758 million adults‎ aged 15 years and older remain ‎illiterate, two-thirds of whom are women. ‎

The CAPMAS statement adds that the illiteracy rate in Egypt for those aged between 15 and 24 is lower than the ‎rate for those above 60, with 6.6 ‎percent for youths compared to 59.4 percent for the elderly, which ‎according to the statement reflects “positive development towards ‎lowering the rates of illiteracy in the future.”

Come on Doctor, you are quite famous for your flying fickle fingers!

You have a great mind and a lot to impart to the reader. Although you never edit, what you write is understandable if not grammatically correct.

Unfortunately, I find MT for example such hard work I rarely try to make sense of what he has written. His latest - "Yes in UK terms a bung a low roof on."
This is the total post and I simply do not understand. :urm:

Lately all his posts about Luxor have been exactly the same.

Just the words rearranged to give the impression he has something new to say.

Aha! That must be the reason for the "has" "as" dilemma - to keep us on our toes.

My problem is that I naturally scan, not read word by word unless it's on a Kindle. Great for proof reading at speed, but otherwise brings me up short if there is a mistake.

While on the subject, I hate predictive text, especially on my phone. Two of it's favourites that I can not correct are Finally instead of Fiona and St, Neots instead of Neo. I plead guilty to Flying Fickle Finger syndrome as well.

I once knew a bloke down in Kent called 'Bungalow Bill, he was knocking off an air hostess friend of mine.
Then got his leg-ove some tart called Joan Collins,
He was 'wiggy' to his mates...
He made the papers for a bit, he was from the farming Porsche hooray's Kentish jet set...8) 8) 8)

Of course illiterate does not mean stupid. I know many illiterate Egyptians who are very intelligent and have demonstrated that they are capable of considerable achievement. :up

People who can read are often as thick as two short planks.

I thought that was clever. :D

My problem is that for a very long time now, I will not be able to book a bungalow without hearing Major Thom saying: "Bung a low!"

The "Bung a low roof on it" joke is not new, it has been around in the Uk for at least 50 years that I know of, I am surprised so many had not heard of it before. The joke was that the bricklayer had run out of bricks after he reached just above door height, so he asked the foreman what he should do. "Oh just bung a low roof on it" came the reply. ;)
